What Do You Do When It’s Too Hot? Shop!

Over the past few days, NYC residents were forced to deal with an overwhelming heat wave of record temperatures. City dwellers searched for any way to escape the heat, and for once, sitting in the office for a few extra hours just to take advantage of the blasting AC was actually enjoyable rather than aggravating! Of the many creative ways residents found to survive the heat wave, one surprising result of the 100+ degree heat was an actual increase in shopping and sales. Retailers found that during the heatpocalypse, businesses saw double-digit increases in sales on seasonal items — meaning consumers forgot about the recession, got confused about the season, and whipped out those credit cards to buy items for FALL! Personally, I can’t imagine trying anything on in a dressing room except for mini dresses and bathing suits when I’m this hot, so I can hardly imagine even contemplating buying boots and sweaters. Are you spending more cash and shopping to escape the heat? And if so, what exactly are you buying? [WWD] Keep reading »

Return To The ’50s With Janie Bryant’s “Mad Men” Style

While you wait for Don Draper’s cigarette-smoking, alcohol-swilling hotness to return, the costume designer for “Mad Men” devised a solution to cure your withdrawal. After dressing Joan, Betty, and the boys in vintage designs for the past few seasons, Janie Bryant decided to launch her very own collection for QVC, obviously inspired by her work on the show. Meet Mod by Janie Bryant, which will include outerwear, jackets, sweaters, bottoms, handbags, and costume jewelry, is set to launch on September 29. In case you can’t wait that long, don’t stress. To coincide with the “Mad Men” premiere at the end of July, select pieces from the clothing line are set to appear on the QVC website this August so you can get your ’50s look on. “‘Mad Men’ has had such an influence on fashion in that women are dressing up more, so these are statement pieces that can change your outfit in an instant,” she explained. Fans of the show and style will find this collection is all in the details: detachable fur collars, lace, bright colors and patterns along with items that bring to mind the style of the ’50s and ’60s. Given the price range — $26 to $138 — this is a great way to jump into the vintage trend if you’re too lazy to dig through the bins at Goodwill or too grossed out to wear someone else’s clothes. Need A Quick Summer Hair How-To For Your Weekend Plans?

Given the recent increase in temperatures and summer’s obvious arrival, I’m searching for any way to tie up my long locks and get them off the nape of my neck, without resorting to plain and basic ponytails. And to add to my hair issues, this weekend I’m heading to humid Baltimore, Maryland for a friend’s (outdoor) wedding — I’ve been looking for a simple but pretty up-do that’s easy enough to replicate, but looks fancy and intricate without spending hours (and dollars) at the salon. Thanks to this how-to based on Emma Roberts’ chic bun, I now have a great wedding hairstyle which is simple and easy to emulate — not to mention ideal for fancy warm weather occasions or a day at the office. There’s minimal effort involved, very few steps, and even less products. Read on for the quick instructions! Keep reading »

Would You Take Fashion Advice From Strangers?

Gone are the days of asking for fashion advice from friends or relatives. With the increase of social media and voyeuristic websites, women and men all over are turning to people they don’t even know to critique wardrobe choices and style looks for the day on new sites like Go Try It On and Fashism which have exploded in the last year. Each has the same basic function: upload an image of yourself in the outfit you want to wear and wait for the comments to roll in. Thanks to the speed of the internet, and the volume of users, you’ll have an answer in a matter of minutes — whether it’s good or bad. While friends might feel the need to sugar coat your decision so as not to hurt your feelings, a total stranger will likely give you a true assessment. What’s most interesting, however, is that users come to the site not only to receive advice, but also to dish it out. In today’s world, where everyone can be a style blogger, these sites are now making it possible for anyone to be a stylist or fashion editor as well. Are these sites you use or would use? Would you want to get and give style criticism to/from strangers? [NY Times] Keep reading »

Modesty Returns With The Mid-Calf Dress!

Do we have “Mad Men” to thank for the return to ’50s styling and modest silhouettes? While celebrities have been strutting around in the smallest and sheerest items on the market, runway designs have begun to take a more modest approach, reminiscent of the pieces our elder family members once wore. It’s time to button up, hide those knees, and learn to show off your figure thanks to the curves of a dress, rather than navigate skimpy and see-though designs. Meet the midi dress, which hits your calves instead of mid-(or high) thigh, tucks in the waist, and welcomes a discreet look back into your wardrobe. Given the recent trend of showing it all off to the world in bras as tops and lingerie as outerwear, the return to a meeker look will undoubtedly be a welcome change. But if you’re too afraid to buy a brand-new dress to try out the trend, we’d suggest going vintage trolling or snipping off the bottom of one of the few maxi dresses taking up space in your closet. You Know You Want To Look Inside Lady Gaga’s Manor

Just a few years ago, Stefani Germanotta was living in a small apartment in New York City while working hard to make it in the music business. These days, she’s headlining Madison Square Garden, capriciously writing on Birkin bags with Sharpies, and strutting around in Alexander McQueen heels. But that’s not all. When Lady Gaga isn’t on the road entertaining her little monsters, she’s chilling in some majorly spacious digs — her six-bedroom, eight-bathroom mansion in Bel-Air! Talk about a lifestyle change. And though she’s experienced some money issues in the past, having already reported losses of about $3 million dollars, Gaga clearly can’t put a lock on her expenses, and is shelling out $25,000 a month for her brand-new house. The gorgeous property spans about 6,143 square feet, boasts a gate, marble floors, curved staircase, huge pool and a gourmet kitchen. Hopefully, her good luck and fame continues in order to keep up with the spending habit she’s acquired. Check out another photo, after the jump … [Real Estalker] Keep reading »

“Eat, Pray, Love”‘s Excessive Sartorial Attention

I’ll admit it. I was a HUGE fan of Eat, Pray, Love when the book was originally released, and even suggested it to all of my girlfriends, aunts, cousins, and extended family members. But with the soon-to-be-released movie on the horizon, this is no longer just a surprise bestselling book seen in the hands of women all over the world — it’s become a total sellout. Designers and retailers are taking advantage of consumers’ love for Elizabeth Gilbert’s search for fulfillment and selling everything from fragrances at Fresh to movie paraphernalia at Fred Segal and ABC Home. Now, designer Sue Wong has launched an entire collection of ready-to-wear clothing called “Eat Pray Love by Sue Wong,” which draws inspiration from the plot line in India and Indonesia. Converse Helps “The Hills” Live On

Admittedly, “The Hills” hasn’t been the same since Lauren Conrad left, but die-hard fans are going to have to find a new way to fulfill their need for fake drama and blank stares now that the show is finally coming to an end. For those who just can’t live without Kristin, Lo, Stephanie, and Audrina in their lives, Converse is here to help. The shoe brand decorated a pair of their sneaks with snaps of the stars, so now you can walk around and show off your love for the girls, while undoubtedly enduring a few judging looks from passersbys. If that doesn’t satiate your “Hills” love, don’t get too depressed just yet. There are rumors that Stephanie Pratt is thinking of moving to New York to join the cast of “The City” — which hasn’t been canceled? — in order to keep up with her reality show career and continue with her crocodile tear action. Watch out, Manhattan. [Crushable] Keep reading »
