Queen Latifah has possessed a powerful image since the 1980s. Who can forget the impact of a female MC donning queen-like garb — leather Africa medallions, Nefertiti-esque hats, and other Afro-centric attire? But, still, we would never argue that she’s a fashion icon. So we’re kind of surprised she, too, has a lifestyle brand with HSN. Literally every celebrity has a fashion or lifestyle collection, causing our heads to spin around and question what it means to be an actual fashion designer. Keep reading »
The first installment of the Lorien Legacies series, I Am Number Four by Pittacus Lore, had us quaking in our boots with excitement, as we learned of nine alien teens who must battle the Mogadorian horde to save Earth and awaken their home planet Lorien. But the second book in the series, The Power of Six, has even more action because John Smith and Six have honed their Legacies — or superpowers — and don’t spare one evil Mogadorian. Even Number Seven and other Lorien aliens get in on the battles, ripping Mogs limb from limb. The action-packed imagery of the The Power of Six lifts off the page, and you’ll kick yourself for reading it so quickly, but with superpower-fueled battles like this, you won’t be able to stop yourself.
I’ve hated wearing (and sorting) socks for years now because I find tube socks too bulky, binding, and boring. But after my recent introduction to Sock it to Me socks, I found myself trying to style a whole look that shows off the Chat Noir design. I love the wry smirk of the cat and the overall sinister feel of the socks. But if cats aren’t your thing, I bet Sock it to Me has a design that is … whether it be birds, eyeglasses, mustaches, skulls, or roller derby stripes — there’s something for every woman, man, and child!
This has been the summer of strange bikini waxing experiences. First, a waxer I found through a Living Social deal was a double-dipper. Then last week, I tried another waxer, who I found through Groupon. I had a rather pleasant experience, but something the esthetician said has confused me, and I’m not sure if I should be insulted or thankful she was trying to help me. Keep reading »
Loafers are making a huge comeback this fall. But that’s not the only reason we’re loving this shoe style. We think loafers are the perfect shoe to transition from summer to autumn because they show a little skin, but not as much as a sandal or peep-toe would, and they offer more structure and support than a ballet flat. Classic loafers are the epitome of a preppy lifestyle, but there are some funkier styles available for those of us who are more edgy and downtown. Here are 17 of our favorites.
Wearing white after Labor Day is no longer taboo. But figuring out how to transition your white summer fashions into fall can be tricky because you don’t want it to be obvious you’re wearing your summer clothes. So we put together three looks that feature a piece of white clothing–including a dress, a blazer, and a pair of jeans–as inspiration for wearing your summer whites in autumn.
Gap has built its reputation around its classic denim jeans, but this fall, the retailer is shaking things up. The Gap 1969 collection will feature deep, saturated colors like the rust corduroy legging above. Gap has also developed unique washes. Its legging jean will be available in a gummy texture along with subtle camouflage and leopard prints. These definitely aren’t your regular blue jeans, but the corduroy leggings and legging jeans are just as affordable and comfortable. I lived in my Gap cords and black legging jeans last winter because they have just the right amount of stretch to be comfortable, but also hold their shapes.

We’re all for multi-functional fashion, but this new trend that one of our favorite street style sites, Chictopia, is advocating makes us scratch our heads. According to the site, the blogosphere is going crazy for long-sleeve shirts transformed into skirts without any sewing. The collar becomes the waistband, and the sleeves are tied around the waist. There’s power in taking style risks — one special look can get a style geek on the fashion icon list in a heartbeat. But it seems counterproductive to make a shirt-as-skirt look avant garde, instead of thrown on, which seems to be the trend’s very point. Check out a few more examples of the look in practice, after the jump… [Chictopia] Keep reading »
Summer is winding down now, but we’re still loving bright colors. While the color-blocking trend got us to try wearing colors together, we still realize the impact of bold color with neutral cream. Just check out the photo of Molly Sims above. The tailoring of her orange-red blazer says, “I’m not to be messed with,” but the fluttering of her cream mini dress says, “But I can have fun too!” We took inspiration from Molly’s look, but tweaked it a bit, swapping the orange-red blazer for a coral one, and chose round-toe pumps over pointed shoes. See the look and get the details after the jump. Keep reading »
