What’s In A Name?
Do you remember when you were a child and it was cool to have a cup, key chain or T-shirt with your name on it? Well, I never had that luxury, you see, because I have a rather unique name. I learned early on in life that I would never be able to walk into a gift shop and purchase anything with my name on it right off the rack. If I wanted a personalized key chain, they’d better have engraving. If I wanted a T-shirt, hopefully they had airbrushing. So as you may have guessed, I wasn’t one of those people who could say, “My name means blah, blah, blah,” either. But most of my life, I’ve been comforted with knowing that my mom always knew she would name me ‘Annika’ after reading Pippi Longstocking as a girl, even if she didn’t know the meaning. And I love being named after the best friend of the most unconventional and assertive redhead ever.

The Gap Is Bringing Romance Back
I’m the type of shopper who walks into a Gap and sees through the basic necessities to the wonderful fashion possibilities. In fact the last time The Gap had an item that I HAD to have was last year. I’m sure you remember the ruffle-front shirt dress that was all over ads last summer. Well, now, I can say that I’m totally head-over-heels for the Romantic Collection that was recently unveiled in stores and online. Keep reading »

Vogue Italia’s “Black Issue” Gets A Distribution Increase
While all the techies were clamoring for the new iPhone last Friday, fashionistas were trying to secure Vogue Italia‘s monumental “Black Issue” — all of the featured models are Black and all the featured content addresses Black women. But don’t fret if you haven’t gotten your copy yet. Conde Nast has increased distribution by 40 percent in the U.S. and Italian copies earmarked for return will be sent to the U.S. The company will also print an additional 10,000 copies to keep up with demand for the issue. Cheers to Vogue Italia for taking this giant leap toward diversity. Now let’s hope special issues like this won’t be necessary in the future. And we’ll be watching the runways in September to see diversity in practice. [WWD] Keep reading »
Catfights On TV: Strategies Of A Queen Bee
On Friday, I did indeed watch Queen Bees on the N, like I promised. And boy do I have to say that it was everything the network had promised. Cat fights. Lies. And diva-tude, galore. I usually get annoyed when producers release the first 10 minutes of a show because when the show actually airs, only half of it is new content. I was pleasantly surprised, however, to learn that Bees was a whole hour long, so I settled in for an extended romp with mindless television. But the thing is, this show isn’t mindless and neither are its contestants. Some of these girls are real schemers. Keep reading »
The Daily Hotness: Lupe Fiasco
Lupe Fiasco has an understated sexiness that’s part geek—he reads and spews Nietzsche—and part kick-ass—he earned his first black belt in karate by age 10 and is adept at firearms. You won’t find him showing off a muscle-ripped body or wearing labels across his chest, but he has totally perfected the nerd-chic style. And his stare alone will have you begging, “Tell me your inner-most thoughts.” Keep reading »
Alert: Queen Bees Attacking Tonight
The N Network has a new show, Queen Bees, premiering tonight at 9 p.m., and I’m not ashamed to admit that my Friday night is looking up. The show is not about nature, but does feature queen bees, or biyatches, in their natural, swanky habitat. Host Yoanna House (America’s Next Top Model, Cycle Two) will try to change these self-described mean girls, who were nominated by family and friends, into nice girls by giving them soul-bettering tasks, and whoever shows the most growth wins $25,000. Crave Slideshow: Enamel Jewelry
Bright accessories are everywhere this season, and enamel jewelry is one way of participating in this trend. You can add flair to jeans and a T-shirt, update a business suit with a small punch of color or reinvent your stand-by LBD with these picks. With the right attitude, you can wear enamel jewelry with just about anything. I’m totally craving the Juicy Couture stud earrings and Banana Republic’s Parachute Ring. And the great thing, too, is you don’t have to break the bank to get your hands on this jewelry! Keep reading »
