How To Teach Boys To Be Feminists

kids photo

Recently, I wrote a blog post about teaching our girls to be feminists. But I also think boys should be taught what it is to be a feminist. A couple of years ago, I recall a conversation I had with my 13-year-old nephew who is quite intelligent and a bit beyond his years. He was saying that he and his friends had had a discussion about who had it easier, men or women. They decided that women did for various reasons. A huge conversation ensued, as you can imagine, with my nephew, his mother, his grandmother and grandfather, and me. I think decidedly, by the end of the talk, we might have changed his mind! But it was a great moment to have an intelligent discussion about gender and what it means to be male or female in today’s world.

There seems to be a lot more research being done lately about boys and gender stereotyping. Undoubtedly, we need boys who will grow up understanding and appreciating what it means to be female in our society as well as the world-at-large because they will benefit from that awareness and so will everyone else. There are plenty of adult men out there who support women’s rights and work equally as hard to continue to make sure that girls and minorities are at the forefront of the discourse about equal rights. The question is, are we raising boys who are sensitive to inequity, critical thinkers, and culturally aware? Keep reading »

The Racy Allure Editorial Starring Karlie Kloss Is Being Made Into A Big Deal

For a Mario Testino – shot beauty editorial in this month’s Allure, 19-year-old Karlie Kloss wears very little makeup — along with very little of anything else. (A sample fashion credit: “necklace by Fenton, spandex thong by Victoria’s Secret.”) Though her modesty’s consistently preserved, it’s only thanks to some splayed fingers here and well-positioned bath bubbles there — and this not-really-a-scandal has some bloggers clutching their pearls and reeling from the shock of it all. First Time For Everything: Phone Sex

As I laid on the couch, having a very regular, very non-inspiring evening alone watching baseball, I got an onslaught of sexts from the woman I was dating. After a series of lewd and kind of hilarious d**k pics, she replied with what looked like a Vogue magazine worthy, very tasteful, classy black and white digital nude. I got harder than Chinese algebra. I went from zero to phone sex in a matter of seconds. I dialed my woman. It was the next logical step. Keep reading »

Soapbox: Celebrate Your Dang Anniversary In Person—Not On Facebook!

If you wish your spouse a happy anniversary in the privacy of your own home, does it count? Apparently not. I’ve noticed an influx of wedding anniversary, humblebrag updates on Facebook lately. Here are a few favorite examples posted in the last month*:

“Five years ago this very day, I married the man I love. We danced to “L-O-V-E” as sung by Natalie Cole. Today, our anniversary, we plan to keep that dance going. Dearest Kevin, I do!”

Girl Talk: On Calling A Man “Daddy” In Bed

dominated woman photo

He liked to talk in bed — a lot, and always dirty — and, as part of his rhetorical repertoire, he liked to tell me about other women he’d been with while he was getting me off. He’d whisper in my ear about how this one went down on him while he told her what a whore she was, or how that one responded when he called her a slut while she was on her knees in front of him. When I told him he wasn’t allowed to call other women by my name — “slut” — anymore, he kissed me so hard I couldn’t breathe and nailed me until I couldn’t see straight. Keep reading »

The Anatomy Of An Amazing News Item: Michaele Salahi, Journey & A Kidnapping

False alarm, people. Michaele Salahi has not been kidnapped as her husband Tareq believed. She is alive and well in Memphis, safe in the arms of Journey guitarist Neal Schon (who also happens to be her former lover). Well, thank God she wasn’t abducted. A note to Tareq: when your wife goes for her hair appointment and never comes back, she most likely is leaving you for another man. And maybe, just maybe if you don’t stop believin’, she will come back to you once she tires of life on the road or needs her roots dyed, whichever comes first. [Us Weekly, Bumpshack] Keep reading »

Girl Talk: On Being “That Young Guy With Cancer’s Wife”

cancer wife photo

When I married Jason on August 7, 2010, the same day as his 29th birthday, we didn’t feel that marriage would change our relationship dramatically. After five years of dating, we were true partners-in-crime who had traveled the world together, raised two small dogs as though they were our children, and enjoyed daily debriefing sessions involving beers and work dramas we called “Power Hours.” Classifying us as genuine best friends would be an understatement. However, when Jason was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) on April 2, 2011, our world and our relationship was flipped upside-down. Everything changed — and I don’t just mean the obvious cancer hurdle. Striving to feel like a normal newlywed couple was, and still is, the most difficult challenge. Keep reading »

Girl Talk: I Was The Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

Most people have encountered a crazy ex-girlfriend in some form, a being to be pitied and scorned. It was frightening how easy it was to find myself, normally a level-headed, rational woman, turning into one. Keep reading »

Campus Confidential: My Freshman Year, I Vow To Major In “Unafraid”

campus confidential

I wouldn’t say that I was a nerd in high school. Although I have adopted the art of procrastination as ardently and with as much love as if it were a tiny puppy alone on the side of the road in a rainstorm, I did in fact manage to get some studying in. But despite grades and test scores that were high enough to award me admittance to one of the best schools in the country, I’d never call myself geeky. “Loner” probably isn’t the right word, either. I wasn’t exactly in the running for prom queen (real talk: I didn’t even go to prom my junior year, gasp) but I had a particularly close group of best friends who were like my sisters. I never felt alone, but rather constantly surrounded by people who loved me. No, the only thing I can definitively say to describe who I was in high school is that I was there. Keep reading »

The 12 Sexiest Accents In The World

In the unending pursuit of love, or its less eternal surrogate, the right accent can be as attractive as bright eyes, a beaming smile and a parabolic backside.

For world travelers, a far-flung tongue promises the unknown, confirms the known and dispels the thought-we-knew. Keep reading »
