More than a dozen people arrested in connection with Kim Kardashian’s robbery
After weeks with no updates, French police made arrests in Kim Kardashian’s Paris robbery that took place in October. Masked thieves broke into Kardashian’s Paris residence, held her at gunpoint, locked her in the bathroom, and stole $10 million worth of jewelry before riding away on bikes. One robber dropped a diamond pendant while riding away that someone found and turned into the police.
Europe 1 reports that at least 17 people were picked up in early morning raids Monday (though other places have reported 16), but no one has been officially charged yet. DNA found at the scene reportedly helped identify the suspects, as well as security camera footage. “One of the DNA samples matched an individual known to police for robbery and criminal offences, who is considered a major thug,” an official told Agence France-Presse. The evidence then allowed the police to put together a picture of the criminal network behind the robbery that the source said stretched all the way to Belgium.
The police arrested people suspected of committing the actual robbery, acting as middle men, and selling the stolen property. Many of those arrested are believed to be part of an “experienced” crime group, as they’re in their 40s, 50s, and 60s, with the oldest suspect at 72 years old. None of those arrested have been identified publicly yet.
On top of the arrests, money and documents were also reportedly taken in the raids in Paris and southern France. According to LCI, Kardashian will help identify the suspects in a video lineup from New York, though it’s unclear when. They can be held for at least 96 hours without official charges being brought.
After the robbery during Paris Fashion Week, a spokeswoman for the celeb said she was “badly shaken but physically unharmed.” Kardashian has mostly stayed out of the public eye since the traumatic event, and skipped her first planned public appearance after Kanye was hospitalized in November. In a clip from a new Keeping Up With the Kardashians episode, she tells her family about the experience. “They’re going to shoot me in the back,” she says through sobs. “There’s no way out. It makes me so upset to think about it.”
Although she hasn’t spoken out about the robbery herself yet, most of her family did following the incident. Caitlyn Jenner wrote in an Instagram post, “Love my girl! After hearing the full story, I’m so thankful she’s okay. It’s a reminder for us all to be careful in the uncertainty of this world.”
