Worried soul starts GoFundMe to “protect” Betty White from 2016
This garbage year has taken Prince, David Bowie, George Michael, and countless other talented celebs from us. After news broke of Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher’s death Tuesday, one extremely worried citizen started a GoFundMe to “protect” Betty White from 2016 (i.e. help keep her alive somehow). The comedian is 94, so it’s not totally ridiculous to worry about her.
“Help 2016 catch these hands if it goes anywhere near Betty White!” the campaign description reads. “If she’s okay with it I will fly to where ever Betty White is and keep her safe till Jan 1, 2017. Now, assuming she doesn’t want a strange Greek standing gaurd outside her door all monies will be donated to the Spartanburg little theater to help craft new stars of stage and screen.”
The campaign quickly surpassed the original goal of $2,000, and the creator, Demetrios Hrysikos, posted an update saying all the money will go to his local South Carolina theater to help foster new talent “to carry the mantel of all the great ones we lost this year.”
Hrysikos wrote on the GoFundMe page that he had been at work and didn’t realize his joke had actually taken off and gained so much attention, but he was happy to raise money for the unnamed Spartanburg theater. “The idea came to me after news of Carrie fishers passing to try and put a smile Back on some people faces and do some good!” he wrote.
Hrysikos continued, “I’d like to think that Betty, Carrie, and Bowie would be happy with any proceeds going to that cause, which I assure you it WILL!”
So, the money isn’t really going to protect the beloved actress from the inevitable. I mean, unless Hrysikos is an actual doctor, he couldn’t do much if White had a heart attack or some other medical emergency in his presence. But it’s the thought that counts, I suppose.
Because the world is a sad, cruel place, there have been rumors of White dying in the past, but she is still very much alive. When her name started trending on Twitter after Fisher’s death, people got really worried before realizing White was safe and sound.
Luckily, there are only three days left in 2016. But hopefully White will be with us for much, much longer. It certainly doesn’t hurt to donate to local theaters, art programs, and artists, though, so if you still want to give to Hrysikos’ campaign, you can do so here.
