Minnesota mother sues her transgender kid for seeking gender reassignment

In today’s segment of cisgender people finding the craziest ways to portray themselves as the real victims of society, Minnesota mother Anmarie Calgaro announced in a press conference she is suing her 17-year-old transgender child for pursuing gender reassignment without Calgaro’s awareness or consent.

Calgaro’s lawsuit is challenging a Minnesota law that permits minors to seek medical care without the knowledge of their parents or guardians so long as they are emancipated. An emancipated minor is defined as living separately from their parents and “who is managing personal financial affairs, regardless of the source or extent of the minor’s income, may give effective consent to personal medical … mental and other health services, and the consent of no other person is required.”

At the press conference, Calgaro claimed through tears that “the news that county agencies and health service providers, the school and other county and state offices were completely bypassing [her] came as a total shock.” She asked, “Why wasn’t I even notified?”

Additionally, Calgaro suggested that her child’s desire to transition is likely just a phase. “Nobody even at 20 years old would go back and make the same decisions as they would at 16, I mean I can’t imagine anyone in this room, would go back and go, ‘Yeah I was proud of that moment in my life,'” Calgaro said. Throughout the press conference, Calgaro consistently misgendered her daughter, paradoxically claiming, “I care so deeply for my son, I want to be involved in this process.”

Court papers created by Calgaro’s daughter, an unnamed minor, and the Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid in June of 2015 reveal that Calgaro, at the time, made it clear that she wanted no relationship with her daughter and did not make any legal attempt to keep her. However, Calgary’s attorney, Erick Kaardal, argues that Calgaro did not receive a court order of emancipation and did not have say in the process.

Still, Minnesota Child Protection League President, Michele Lentz, has gotten behind Calgary’s cause and taken the debate in an entirely different direction, arguing that gender reassignment is a “dangerous” process. “They are financing and prescribing dangerous hormonal drugs and prescription narcotics to a minor without his mother’s knowledge, involvement or consent,” Lentz said in a statement.

Aside from this being a misrepresentation of the process, I’m inclined to believe that if the safety of trans individuals were really the concern here, Lentz and others who share her perspective would be more worried about high rates of murder and violence against trans people, and the abuse, harassment, and stigma they face just to use public restrooms. But, alas.

In addition to being represented by Kaardal, Calgaro is also being represented by the Thomas More Society law firm, the same law firm that defended David Daleiden, who allegedly created the series of illegally obtained, highly misleading Planned Parenthood propaganda videos of 2015, and has a record of working on anti-abortion cases in favor of the anti-choice movement, Jezebel reports. The firm’s decision to represent Calgaro in her paternalistic, transphobic quest to strip her own child of bodily freedom should come as no surprise.
