Need some pizza while stuck in line voting? This Twitter account has your back
Given that this election is so close and people are going crazy waiting to find out who will win, any random act of kindness should be welcomed. Which is why this Twitter account sending pizza to polls with long lines is sort of amazing. What’s more American than some dude sending pizza to people waiting to fulfill their right to vote? In other countries with newer elections, people are just happy to be able to vote. Nah, in the United States we need a slice or two to make it more enticing.
The account is @PizzaToThePolls, and you can also hit the organization up on its website, where it takes donations and orders. The website says, “Americans are hungry for democracy and are turning out in record numbers to vote. But that means long lines and sometimes empty stomachs, which might discourage these brave patriots from performing their civic duty.”
Not a bad mission statement. So far, Pizza to the Polls has delivered almost 275 pizzas and has around $12,000 leftover to continue making deliveries throughout the day and night. It’s delivered pizzas to Miami and Tamarac, Florida, Chicago and Evanston, Illinois, and Cincinnati. In the website’s FAQs section, the organization says it uses SliceLife to find people’s local pizza spots and tried to go with small businesses when possible (but some Pizza Hut stuffed crust sure would be nice…).
The organization is non-partisan, founded by two Portland guys, Scott Duncombe and Noah Manger. They founded the Americans Against Insecure Billionaires With Tiny Hands PAC, which is obviously anti-Trump and had about $2,000 in donations leftover. The guys wanted to put it to a “friendlier” cause on Election Day, according to a Huffington Post interview with Duncombe. So, they’re probably #WithHer, but you can order a pizza no matter who you vote for. “It’s for everyone who’s there: voters, poll workers, volunteers. We’re just trying to bring a little bit of joy to people waiting to vote,” Duncombe said.
Pizza for the Polls says that if there’s money leftover after today, it will go to a charity that provides food to those who need it (like, really need it, and aren’t just craving a slice of pepperoni).
It’s really easy to do, so if you’re stuck in line, you should try it. You have to tweet them with your polling place address and some evidence of the crazy line. The pizza gods also tweeted that they could use some help to keep up with demand, telling people they can place pizza orders and send them the receipt to be reimbursed. So, if you really want to feed a line of voters in North Carolina, get at it.
