Police officer’s wife framed Black Lives Matter for a robbery she completely faked
Maria Daly, the wife of a Millbury, Massachusetts police officer, reported that her house had been robbed Oct. 17. Not only did the Daly household purportedly lose cash and jewelry, but according to Daly, their house was also vandalized with graffiti spelling out “BLM,” widely recognized as the initials of the Black Lives Matter movement against racially-charged police brutality. But early on, “something wasn’t quite right,” according to Millbury Police Chief Donald Desorcy. As it turns out, Desocry’s gut feeling was correct: the local cop’s wife not only framed Black Lives Matter, but did so for a crime that she herself fabricated, CBS Boston reports.
Following the “robbery,” Daly almost immediately took to Facebook to broadcast her experience (as one does): “We woke up to not only our house being robbed while we were sleeping, but to see this hatred for no reason,” she wrote in her post, referencing the graffiti. “If you had would of asked me yesterday about this blue lives and black lives matter issue my response would of been very positive,” she added. I’m sure her “positive” outlook on Black Lives Matter guided her to associate a movement already unnecessarily and deeply stigmatized with crime and delinquency stereotypes by framing it for a fabricated crime.
Local investigators have since deemed the entirety of Daly’s account false.
“Something wasn’t quite right. I think that was pretty obvious and as a result of that investigation, the officers did their due diligence and followed through with the investigation that we had,” Desocry told CBS Boston. “Basically we came to the conclusion that it was all fabricated. There was no intruder, there was no burglary.”
Local police ruled that Daly’s husband, who is, again, a Millbury police officer, had nothing to do with the fabricated robbery. But regardless, the “robbery” was obviously motivated by a desire to demonize a movement that is wrongly associated with hatred for and violence toward police, and considering the frenzy sparked by the incident, was at least temporarily successful in doing so.
Daly has been charged with filing a false police report and misleading a police investigation, but the damage has arguably already been done. Still, the irony of Daly’s actions has hardly been lost on her neighbors.
“She must have tagged the place herself,” one neighbor told CBS. “I don’t know why you’d do that, if you’re gonna stage a robbery, I mean really come on, you’re a cop’s wife. You should know better.” Daly’s portrayal of Black Lives Matter as the sort of group that robs houses speaks a lot to the kind of people she perceives them to be, just as her own actions speak a lot to the kind of person she is.
