Black metal band joins couple for hardcore engagement photoshoot in the woods

Engagement pics are adorable, but too often they’re full of cliches. Kicking up one foot you while you kiss on the beach, making a heart with your hands… we’ve seen it all before. Except for this couple, whose engagement photos with a black metal band blow those cheesy, contrived shots out of the water.

Nydia Hernandez and her fiancee, John Awesome (whose real name is John Nguyen), from California were in the middle of a Forrest Gump-themed engagement photoshoot inspired by Awesome’s favorite movie. However, when they moved the location into the woods, they ran into some unexpected guests: the members of black metal band Coldvoid, who were also in the woods to shoot promotional photos. The band describes their musical mission as “Delving into the depths of the unknown in this world of chaos,” which coincidentally is an excellent summary of marriage. Love is real, folks, and it’s metal as fuck.

In full corpse-paint makeup, spikes, and leather and carrying prop swords and a candelabra, they made a perfect backdrop for Hernandez and Awesome’s romantic memories. At least the couple must have thought so, because they soon asked the band to join them in their photos.

Of course, the band obliged. As Hernandez told ABC News, they were “super nice people,” and how often do you get to be part of two total strangers’ engagement pictures? Plus, nothing says “love” like a guy brandishing a sword at crotch level while another guy throws up devil horns at the camera.

Sounds great for the couple, you might be thinking, but what about the poor engagement photographer? Didn’t this screw up her carefully planned schedule? No need to worry. Evidently, photographer Janet Wheeland was super into it. “When you run into a black metal band in the woods during your engagement session,” she said to BuzzFeed, “you ask them to join in.” She even did a special mini-shoot with Coldvoid by themselves, who in turn gave her and the couple a copy of their demo, “Verses from the Deceased,” to accompany their drive back from the session.

While Hernandez and Awesome — whom Coldvoid described as “the most metal couple on Earth” — now have the engagement photos of the millennium, the band isn’t doing so bad, either. They got some really nice images from Wheeland and have used the publicity around the engagement shoot to promote their demo. Good feelings and good outcomes all around.

The only question is: How are the couple going to top this at their wedding? My vote’s for going full black metal. Corpse paint and spikes for everyone! Also, if they still have to book the entertainment, now they have a lead on a band.
