Lady Gaga says she’s actually nothing like Madonna so stop comparing them already
Don’t get it twisted — although she respects the woman, Lady Gaga says she’s nothing like Madonna and would really appreciate it if everyone would stop comparing them. Gaga laid it down for Zane Lowe on Beats 1 Radio, who said that the two pop stars’ pasts were similar, especially their “overprotective” fathers. Gaga responded, “Madonna and I are very different. Just saying. We’re very different.”
She went on, ” I wouldn’t make that comparison at all and I don’t mean to disrespect Madonna — she’s a nice lady, and she’s had a fantastic huge career, biggest pop star of all time. But I play a lot of instruments. I write all my own music. I spend hours and hours a day in the studio. I’m a producer. I’m a writer. What I do is different.” Ouch.
Then she kept going, adding that by different, she wasn’t just “rehearsing over and over again to put on a show.” Gaga added that she didn’t mean to sound like a huge jerk. “I don’t mean that in a disrespectful way. I just will not be compared to anyone anymore. I am who the fuck I am, and this is me.” Fair enough, right? It almost sounded like she was more mad that Lowe brought up her pops.
Gaga continued on her little rant. “My life story is my life story, just like yours is,” she said. “The thing is we all express things in different ways, but my rebellion at my father for him being angry with me, that has ended. It’s like finally I can bite back.” OK then, Gaga. You do you and no one will ever bring up Madonna in your presence ever again, lest they have their head bitten off.
Back in the day, many people compared “Born This Way” (by Gaga, in case you’ve been off the grid for a decade) to Madonna’s “Express Yourself,” and it was Madonna who was pissed. “The only time I ever criticized Lady Gaga was when I felt like she blatantly ripped off one of my songs,” Madonna said in Rolling Stone at the time.“It’s got nothing to do with ‘she’s taking my crown’ or ‘she’s in some space of mine.’ She has her thing. I do think she’s a very talented singer and songwriter. It was just that one issue,” Madonna added.
I guess I can see it. They’re both provocative female artists who make pop music. In Madonna’s defense, just because she’s not writing ballads or wearing meat dresses doesn’t mean she’s not an artist. For example, Lenny Kravitz co-wrote “Justify My Love” with one of Prince’s songwriters, but it’s Madonna doing her thing and making history in the video. A lot of Madonna songs wouldn’t be all that great without the fanfare, clothes, and symbols she brings to the table. Anyway, there’s an argument that her performances are art.
OK, you caught me: I’m more of a Madonna girl than a Little Monster. They’re both awesome, though, and it would be a whole lot cooler if they just wouldn’t talk shit about each other. Two powerful, talented women have better things to do (or so you would think).
