Donald Trump literally threatened Hillary Clinton during the debate and she LOLed

The second presidential debate effectively managed to go from zero to 100 when Republican candidate Donald Trump threatened Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton within the first half hour. While the two were in the middle of answering the first debate prompts, Trump brought up Clinton’s email scandal, and even went so far as to threaten her with an investigation he alleges he’s had up his sleeve for some time.

Trump said: “I didn’t think I’d say this, but I’m going to say this, and I hate to say it, but if I win, I am going to instruct my attorney general to get a special prosecutor to look into your situation. There’s never been anything like it. And we’re going to get a special prosecutor.”

The fact that Clinton’s rebuttal was a mere shrug paired with laughter speaks volumes — whether the volumes are good or bad is to be determined, but it’s likely she wasn’t too worried given the fact that Trump brought up ISIS when questioned about his statements made about women and consent. Perhaps, Clinton’s laughter when faced with Trump’s threats were because she’s confident he won’t become president at all. However, an even more terrifying possibility is that Clinton is all too aware that Trump would be too busy implementing his policies to spearhead an investigation into Clinton’s private email server.

Regardless of why Clinton laughed when being explicitly threatened on a public stage by her opponent, it sadly speaks to the coping mechanisms of many of us watching this debate. We might as well laugh because these are our options and we can only go forward voting for the best option in front of us. But also, it’s crucial to remember that in order for us to break out of the mind-numbing future of a two-party system that ultimately alienates many of us, getting involved in local elections and voting in the non-presidential elections is crucial for creating a democracy we can get behind.
