Demi Lovato is taking a break from music, saying she’s “not meant for this business”
Demi Lovato is apparently going through a little something. No, really, I’m a little worried for her. Can someone go check on her? Yesterday, after a Glamour article came out in which she “dissed” Taylor Swift, Demi Lovato said she’s taking a break from music and the spotlight. Weird, right? Or maybe not, maybe she’s just properly fed up and ready to move on. But it seems sudden. She tweeted yesterday, “So excited for 2017. Taking a break from music and the spotlight.. I am not meant for this business and the media,” with a little “byeeeeee suckers” shaky hand-emoji. When a fan asked the pop star if she would ever come back, Lovato didn’t sugarcoat it for them, saying, “dunno. It doesn’t feel worth it anymore. I’d rather do charity work tbh.” Wow, OK Demi, tell us how you really feel.
Given the timing, it’s possible Swift has made Lovato question her life and its purpose (which, quite frankly, is something I do every time I catch myself humming “Style”). In an article in Glamour that was released this week, Lovato answered questions about her past comments on Swifts’ charity efforts about empowering women. Lovato said, “I think in certain situations, certain people could be doing more if they’re going to claim that as part of their brand. To be honest, and this will probably get me in trouble, I don’t see anybody in any sort of squad that has a normal body.”
She also went on to say that Swift’s feud with Katy Perry was stupid, too. And she’s right, let’s just face it. It’s stupid. So are all the headlines about Lovato dissing Swift in the Glamour cover story — it’s all a little manufactured. Lovato has a point then that maybe she isn’t cut out for the back and forth of the business.
It hasn’t been an easy year for Lovato, who broke up with her longtime boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama, who’s already been spotted dating other women. Lovato mentioned in her cover story that she thinks “its healthy” for him to move on, but come on, I don’t care how strong and tough you are, that has to suck all around. After they broke up, Lovato claimed she was taking a break from social media but quickly returned (because who can resist?). So it’s possible that the idea of taking a break from her career is just a reaction to calling out Swift and getting some hate online — not to imply that she’s flaky and doesn’t know what she wants, but it happens.
Then again, the ex-Disney star is just 24 years old and has been in entertainment this whole time. I’m just a little nervous that the high profile breakup, the manufactured drama with other celebs, and active sharing on social media are all signs of a rough patch. And I don’t want Lovato to go all Britney Spears on us, even though if she were going to unravel, this would be the time it would happen.
Or, hopefully, she really made a resolution that after she’s done touring in February she needs a change and it has nothing to do with the celeb culture that she says she doesn’t like. Either way, Demi, do you. But stay strong and stop reading the comments and the tabloids.
