The best presidential debate memes, because we all need to laugh after that shitshow

Laughter is really the best response any sane person can have during this crazy election season. These memes from the first presidential debate are definitely the only thing that kept us going Monday night. No candidate was safe from Twitter’s snarky little self, and as the night went on, they only got better. Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and Republican nominee Donald Trump both approached the debate like an old-fashioned duel, serving up one-two policy punches with their veiled insults of each other.

I mean, what did we expect? The debate, moderated by NBC Nightly News’ Lester Holt at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, was highly anticipated by voters and the candidates themselves. Earlier in the month, there was a lot of speculation about how the candidates were preparing for their first face-off. Clinton’s team was rumored to be preparing by studying the GOP primary debates and seeing how to best rattle the real estate mogul. Trump had been preparing by seemingly reading children’s books and learning how a bill becomes a law. It’s almost too easy to make fun of these two.

It’s not all fun and games though. How the candidates perform in these debates could make the election, and as long as Trump doesn’t completely lose his shit, he has a real chance at convincing some viewers that he’d make a good president. Twitter, though, like always, wasn’t fooled Monday night. Here are some the best memes of the night.

Some accurately described the necessary evil that was watching this shitshow before it even got started:

Um, eating during these debates was an act of bravery:

Thankfully for our nerves, there were some pretty cool mic-drop moments:

For anyone who’s feeling particularly facepalm-y (aka ALL OF US):

Not to worry. Adorable animals will make it all better:

And then you sadly have to get back to reality:

There are only two more debates left until the general election in November. If they’re both as wild as Monday’s show, it’s anyone’s guess how this election will go.
