Is Lester Holt a Republican? The NBC News anchor’s party affiliation isn’t a mystery

Getting ready for a fight last week, Republican nominee Donald Trump said the first presidential debate moderator, Lester Holt, is Democrat. But he’s not. Lester Holt is a Republican. According to New York state voting records, Holt has been a registered Republican since 2003. You can understand the confusion: Trump’s teeny tiny brain assumes “The Media” is always out to get him and seems to believe all networks (except for Fox, but not Megyn Kelly) are crazy, liberal scum with a mission to take him down.

Calling Holt a Democrat was a way to get his supporters all huffy and puffy before the candidate faced off with Hillary Clinton Monday night. Say what you want about Clinton, but she knows her shit, so Trump was obviously doing some recon to cover his ass in case he said something really stupid at the debate.

The candidate told Bill O’Reilly, “By the way, Lester is a Democrat. It’s a phony system. They are all Democrats. It’s a very unfair system.” Being able to blame a Democrat moderator is an easy way out.  What’s sort of ironic is that the third debate moderator, Chris Wallace, works with Fox, which is presumably Trump’s safe zone, but Wallace is a registered Democrat. So all of that crap you hear about partisan networks doesn’t come from the anchors themselves.

Even better is how Trump walked back his statement about Holt’s party affiliation. Although he stated it very clearly, like it was true, his campaign had his back Monday morning. Kellyanne Conway, who has clearly sold her soul, told MSNBC that Trump wasn’t spreading lies about Holt because he didn’t even know whether Holt was a Democrat or not. “I don’t know that he knew what Lester Holt’s voter registration was,” Conway said.

Did your head just explode? By that logic, Trump can never be wrong or dishonest just by claiming that he has no idea what he’s talking about (which he seemingly does not). So, he is forgiven for all of the crap that comes out of his mouth. Cool.

Trump was right to be wary of the moderators. Clinton’s campaign asked Holt and other moderators to not go easy on Trump and really get into fact checking him during the debate so another slip up, like being factually incorrect, doesn’t happen on stage. Whether or not Trump got the easy questions will certainly be up for discussion Tuesday morning. But partisan bias from the moderator? That probably won’t be an issue.
