Michelle Obama has no sympathy for Melania Trump’s position in the 2016 election
On Tuesday night, Michelle Obama appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and during her interview that bridged a variety of topics, it was revealed that Obama has no sympathy for Melania Trump or her trifling instance of alleged plagiarism at the Republican National Convention. The interview was as predictably charming as one would envision a conversation between Obama and Colbert to be, and at one point involved Michelle doing a spot-on impression of Barack, nailing his presidential inflection and everything.
Curtailing off her impression of her husband, Colbert asked Obama how she feels about fellow high-profile spouses standing by their partners as they run for president, and whether she feels empathy for spouses who might secretly disagree. Her answer revealed that Obama has no pity for that position. She said:”Uh, no, not really. No, because you have to be in it, if you’re in it, and if you don’t agree you’d should have agreed before they ran. Bottom line is, if I didn’t agree with what Barack was saying, I would not support his run. So, I stand there proudly, and I hope they are too. Standing with their spouses proudly. No Sympathy!”
Welp, that lays it out pretty clearly for any Melania sympathizers who paint her as a captive to Donald Trump’s tyranny.
Following Obama’s statement expressing her firm support for her husband’s politics, Colbert admitted he felt a bit bad for Melania following the plagiarism fiasco. He asked her:
“Melania Trump was so criticized for using what turned out to be a portion of your speech, but do you have any sympathy? Because there are people around her creating things, and you know, I have some sympathy for her. Do you understand how that might be sympathetic, for what happened to her?”
Obama’s response was perfect in both it’s disengagement and obvious lack of sympathy, as she curtly (and wonderfully) shrugged and said, “Yeah, that was tough.”
Really though, what did Colbert expect? The fact that Obama didn’t unleash a fresh-out-of-the-oven roast for Melania shows she has more class than 99 percent of Americans. It would be more than disconcerting if she went through the mental gymnastics required to feign empathy for a woman who not only allegedly plagiarized her, but also stands by one of the most overtly xenophobic, racist, and sensationalist candidates America has seen in decades.
Team Michelle, forever and ever.
