A piece of shit father killed his cancer survivor daughter for getting too much attention

If you needed an uplifting story today, this is not it. Like, at all. On Saturday, Ryan Lawrence pleaded guilty to murdering his daughter who survived eye cancer and indicated that he was jealous of how much attention she was getting. The body of Maddox Lawrence, 21 months old, was found in February about 36 hours after she was reported missing. According to police, the baby had been beaten to death with a baseball bat. Lawrence then burned her body, tied her to a cinder block, and dropped her in a nearby creek in Syracuse, New York.

Pretty gross, huh? If that’s not terrible enough, the motivation for her murder is out of this fucking world. Onondaga County District Attorney Bill Fitzpatrick said in a statement to CBS 5 News, “Without going into too much detail, [Ryan Lawrence’s] statements allude to almost a sense of jealousy about the attention that this child was getting, as opposed to the attention that he was getting.” Fitzpatrick indicated that the toll of his daughter’s treatment and the expense might have contributed to her “demise.”

Lawrence’s wife and Maddox’s mother, Morgan Lawrence, sensed that something was going on. She allegedly found a note on the day of the murder that insinuated something was wrong with Ryan and that he was a danger to himself and their baby. She alerted the cops, who then found Lawrence in Baldwinsville, about ten miles away from where he dropped the body.

Seriously, nothing good happens in upstate New York. Luckily, he confessed in February on the spot and is facing up to 25 years in prison on a first degree murder charge. That means that, since Lawrence is 25 years old, he would get out at 50. I’m not saying 25 years in prison is easy, but it feels like beating a baby with a bat should be a life sentence.

The saddest thing about this isn’t the crime, though. It’s that it could have possibly been prevented.

There’s no mention about whether the Lawrence’s were in counseling or anything after their daughter survived eye cancer, but it was a long, expensive, and (probably) scary process. CBS 6 reports that Lawrence completed a mental health exam and was deemed fit to stand trial — so maybe he’s just a cold-blooded killer. But feeling jealous of a baby for surviving cancer? Shouldn’t a doctor or someone at the hospital have noticed that the father was pretty much losing his shit?

Lawrence is expected to be sentenced next month.
