Watch Katy Perry surprise an Orlando survivor on ‘Ellen’ and just try not to cry

Ellen DeGeneres loves a good surprise, and her latest reveal was almost too much to handle. Katy Perry surprised Orlando shooting survivor Tony Marrero on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and both broke down in tears (as did everyone watching at home). Marrero survived the horrific shooting at Pulse nightclub in June and listened to Perry’s song “Rise” on repeat to help him get through his time in the hospital. “I just want to say thank you for everything you do,” Marrero told Perry. “Your lyrics to that song helped me from the day I was in the hospital all the way to now. Thank you.”

Perry said she told DeGeneres she wasn’t going to be able to control her emotions and even packed a napkin in her sleeve to help wipe away the tears. The pop star told Marrero how inspirational his story is and how glad she was that her music helped him. “Life isn’t easy and you need little reliefs, through songs possibly,” Perry said. “I’m happy to be a joy, I’m happy to be a light, I’m happy I could be there in my own little way to help you.”

Perry also offered to pay for Marrero’s first year of film school.

I’m not crying, YOU’RE CRYING.
