President Obama nominates the first Muslim judge to a federal court

President Obama’s last few months in office are going to be a good ride — he has no more fucks left in his pocket or the desire to play political games with his detractors anymore. Case in point: on Tuesday, Obama nominated the first Muslim judge to a federal court. Obama chose Abid Qureshi for the federal district court of Washington, D.C. to make a little history before he leaves office. It’s the best way for the president to say to every racist in the country that they need to get with the times.

We should all set a countdown clock to when Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump alludes to the fact that Obama has nominated a Muslim to a court. It’s going to be soon, for sure. The candidate’s already suggested that a Muslim judge would be biased against him and that he couldn’t trust one presiding over any of his cases.

Obama hadn’t yet nominated a Muslim even though he spent much of his two terms trying to bring diversity to the courts. And while it’s exciting to change things up, it doesn’t look like Qureshi will be approved anytime soon. The Senate still won’t even think of holding hearings to approve Obama’s pick for the Supreme Court, Judge Merrick Garland, to fill Justice Antonin Scalia’s seat. Really, the GOP seems to be intent on setting records themselves: Garland has been waiting over 170 days to be confirmed, which is way over the 125-day record for not having a full Supreme Court. Good job, guys.

Qureshi is qualified, though. He got a bachelor’s degree from Cornell in 1993 and his law degree from Harvard in 1997. Since then, he’s been working at a leading Los Angeles-based firm, Latham & Watkins, where he’s been a partner since 2006 and managing their pro bono program since 2012. But try telling any Republicans about that.
