Leave Gabby Douglas Alone And Stop Criticizing Every Little Thing She Does In Rio
Unfortunately, people are complete assholes about everything. Even Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas can’t catch a break. Throughout the Rio Olympics, haters have been taking to Twitter to talk shit about her, and Douglas is tired of the hate. People have something to say about every single aspect of her entire being. They’re talking about her performance and how she’s “not as good” as she was in London in 2012. Or her demeanor just walking around. Worst of all, they’re calling the U.S. gymnast unpatriotic because she didn’t put her hand over her heart during the national anthem. Really, come the fuck on people.
Her mother, Natalie Hawkins, was on CNN Monday morning to tell the haters to just knock it off already. She said her daughter is “like a sponge” and soaks up everything she reads about herself — the good, the bad, and the really fucking ugly. Of course, Douglas is far from being unpatriotic. She simply didn’t put her hand over her heart during the anthem. So what? I think the Founding Fathers would forgive her, don’t you? Just for the record, Hawkins told CNN Gabby’s grandparents are both vets; her grandmother is a Navy veteran and her grandpa was in Vietnam. So back the hell up.
Being called “Crabby Gabby” while she watched her teammates from the stands doesn’t help either. Hey, assholes, she’s a fucking champion and one of the best team members. She’s not a sore loser or a jerk; she’s a human being with emotions and feelings and facial expressions. Douglas gave a tearful post-final interview and said, “When they talk about my hair or me not putting my hand up on my heart or me being very salty in the stands, they’re really criticizing me, and it doesn’t really feel good. It was a little bit hurtful.”
Of course it’s hurtful to have people sitting on their asses watching NBC in the middle of the week talking shit about a young woman who has built her entire life around her passion, worked hard, and won. She hasn’t done as well this year as she did in 2012, but she smiled anyway. There’s been a lot of sexist and racist shit going on in Rio during the games but this picking on Douglas pretty much sums everything up.
Asking Douglas to not look so “crabby” is the equivalent of a creepy dude on the corner telling a woman to smile. Douglas does not have to smile for you. Calling a U.S. gold medalist, and granddaughter of veterans, “unpatriotic” for not putting her hand over her heart during the national anthem is bullshit. When was the last time you represented your country? And assuming she’s an angry black woman because she didn’t beat her own record is just racist.
Everyone needs to get off her back. When people say mean, stupid shit on the internet about someone, that someone can usually see it. And it fucking sucks when strangers are talking shit about you and you can’t defend yourself, because they really are just that terrible. Douglas told NBC, “I’ve been through a lot. I still love them. I still love the people who love me. Still love them who hate me. I’m just going to stand on that.”
How’s that for crabby?
