Bill O’Reilly Proves He Knows Literally Nothing About Slavery Or Human Decency
The Democratic National Convention has had a lineup of brilliant speeches so far, but whether you ask a Democrat or a Republican, First Lady Michelle Obama stole the show with an absolutely inspiring speech about social progress Monday night. Of course, being the ignorant, racist bag of dicks he is, Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly managed to make a disgusting comment about slavery in response to Obama’s brief reference to it as part of an important point in her speech.
“I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves. And I watch my daughters, two beautiful, intelligent, black young women, playing with their dogs on the White House lawn,” Obama said. “And because of Hillary Clinton, my daughters and all our sons and daughters now take for granted that a woman can be president of the United States.” Anything is possible and society grows and changes when we fight for that growth and change. Beautiful, right?
Yes, society changes, but apparently people don’t, as O’Reilly proved with his disgusting response. “Slaves that worked there were well-fed and had decent lodgings provided by the government, which stopped hiring slave labor in 1802,” O’Reilly said on the Tuesday night episode of The O’Reilly Factor.
As anyone who took the most basic of U.S. history classes would know, slaveowners varied dramatically in how they treated their slaves, but even if they were kind and gentle and loving, that doesn’t change the fact that slavery as an institution reduced black people to objects entirely at the mercy of their owners.
Feeding and lodging slaves doesn’t change the fact that the era of slavery was one in which black people were literally stripped of their humanity and forced to, as Michelle Obama pointed out, feel “the lash of bondage” and “the shame of servitude.” And now, the descendants of those who weren’t even regarded as human beings can govern this nation.
Noted human trash O’Reilly added, “Michelle Obama is essentially correct in citing slaves as builders of the White House, but there were others working as well.” Well that’s just great!
O’Reilly’s latest remarks are quite literally the worst, and I’m not saying we should give him a pass, but just bear in mind this is the same guy who has called Black Lives matter a “hate group” and “destructive movement” and claimed the movement is “killing Americans.” He’s identified black people as the “ill-educated” with “tattoos on their foreheads.” Irrelevant to his stances on race, but further evidence of just how deeply fucked up he is, O’Reilly once responded to news of a child forced to live with his kidnapper for 4.5 years by claiming he didn’t “buy the Stockholm Syndrome thing” and suggesting “there was an element here that this kid liked about this circumstances.”
Frankly, nothing Bill O’Reilly says at this point should surprise us.
If only Kelly Clarkson would save the day and shut him down the way she did that one Twitter troll who, like O’Reilly, didn’t “like” Obama mentioning that the White House was built by slaves.
