Who Are The New ‘Hamilton’ Cast Members? Three Performers Are Leaving Big Shoes To Fill

Lin-Manuel Miranda is performing as Alexander Hamilton in the Broadway hit Hamilton for the last time Saturday, July 9. Cast members Phillipa Soo (who currently plays Eliza, Hamilton’s wife), and Leslie Odom Jr. (who plays Aaron Burr) are also making their departures, which begs the question: who are they going to pass their blazing hot torches off to once they exit these iconic roles? Luckily, the new Hamilton cast members have been announced, so we don’t have to sit around and anxiously speculate.

Burr will now be portrayed by two-time Tony Award nominee Brandon Victor Dixon, who recently appeared in Shuffle Along on Broadway. Filling in the role of Eliza will be Lexi Lawson, who played opposite Miranda on tour for In The Heights.

Lastly, we have the role of Hamilton. Miranda is leaving some massive shoes to fill, but Javier Muñoz and Michael Luwoye are just the men to do it. According to Broadway World, this will be Luwoye’s Broadway debut. He was in the Off-Broadway musical Invisible Thread, which got him a 2016 Lucille Lortel Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor. Javier Muñoz will play Hamilton seven shows a week and Luwoye will play the Founding Father once a week. Muñoz has been with the show since it’s first form at The Public Theater.

Fans are hoping that once Miranda leaves Hamilton, tickets will be more obtainable, since it’s pretty much impossible to see the show now unless you have a trust fund. However, I don’t think that will be the case for another year or so, being that the show is beyond a Broadway musical at this point — it’s a mainstream phenomenon. Most shows are able to conduct daily lotteries without 7oo people showing up. Most shows are not Hamilton.

Here is a video of Miranda at Wednesday’s lottery reading a letter written by Hamilton (the real one), and saluting Soo and Odom Jr. If you’re not up for the full reading, skip to seven minutes into the video to see Miranda and fans wish the departing cast members “happy trails.”

The way the crowd is screaming, you would think he was stripping or something, and not simply reading from a history book. In fact, I’d love to see a woman get hollered at for reading from a book like Miranda just did. #Goals.

I’m looking forward to seeing each of these new cast members soon! Well, eventually. Hopefully. Maybe.
