Republicans Think Putting Harriet Tubman On The $20 Will Be “Divisive,” But Really They’re Just Afraid Of Change

Of course, a bunch of Republicans don’t want to put Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill. Of fucking course. Republican Representative Steve King from Iowa introduced an amendment Tuesday that seeks to block the replacement of Andrew Jackson with Harriet Tubman on the bill and would actually prohibit changing any bill, ever. In April, Treasury Secretary Jacob J. Lew announced the proposed changes to the bill, with Tubman replacing Jackson on the $20 and images of other women suffragettes added to the $5, without removing other design elements. But King is not having it. If he has his way, we’ll be stuck with old, racist white men forever and ever. Ugh. He says he would like to “keep what we have.” Well, sir, what we have here is racist and sexist all at the same time.

But wait — he thinks the idea of replacing Jackson is sexist and racist. Oh, yea, this gets good. According to Politico, King said Tuesday in the House, “Here’s what’s really happening: this is liberal activism on the part of the president that’s trying to identify people by categories, and he’s divided us on the lines of groups.” He added,”This is a divisive proposal on the part of the president, and mine’s unifying. It says just don’t change anything.”

No, actually refusing to change is not “unifying.” It’s being an asshole. I’m actually a little curious if he would block it if it were a white woman being put on the bill and not a black one, because the comment about “lines of groups” reads like this: we don’t want a black woman on our bill.

There is no “group,” and President Obama is far from an activist. In fact, it’s really fuckers like King and other big racist jerks who insist on blocking every (I mean every) forsaking measure, law, and policy. I don’t even know how they decide what to order for lunch every day.

This is a motherfucker who has troves of “illegal immigration stories” — and not the good, enlightening kind, like Diane Guerrero’s, but ones where the “illegal” (people can’t be illegal, Mr. King) gets caught drunk driving, supporting Donald Trump’s claims that America needs to build a wall. He’s also obsessed with ISIS and wants Obama to launch a large scale strike in Syria, because ISIS is so well known for hanging out all together in one place. And China — he’s not a fan of China, either. Or transgender people. Really, unless you’re white, male, and sort of a bigot, King probably doesn’t want anything to do with you.

Not changing anything means no progress at all, and not just for people of color, but anyone who isn’t a straight, white man. For most of American history, women have had very little rights  — we didn’t even to vote until 1920, and we still don’t get paid as much as men. Putting women on our money is a way of making space for females that isn’t always given to us in society. When men — white men especially — talk about it being sexist to put a woman on our currency, it’s totally missing the fucking point.

It’s sad and scary and super depressing to know that we live in country where men like King are sort of in charge. Let’s hope no one listens to him.
