This Toddler Practicing A Lockdown Drill Is A Harsh Reality Check About Gun Violence
While a mom posting a picture of her daughter demonstrating what she learned at school seems harmless and uneventful, it becomes a harsh wake-up call when you realize toddlers are being taught how to evade rogue gunman. Michigan mom Stacey Wehrman Feeley uploaded a photo to Facebook showing her 3-year-old child practicing the lockdown drill she learned at school, serving as a harsh representation of the scary and sad world we currently live in. The Senate still isn’t budging in regards to stricter gun control laws, even in the wake of the mass shooting that occurred in Orlando less than two weeks ago, so instead of making it more difficult to buy a gun, we’re teaching America’s children what to do in the case of school shootings.
In the post, Feeley confesses that she thought her daughter was playing around, and was going to send the photo to her husband as a “look what our goofball is up to” sort of sentiment. Her mood quickly changed when her daughter informed her she was re-enacting a lockdown drill. “The moment she told me what she was doing I broke down,” Feeley wrote. “She was practicing for a lockdown drill at her preschool and what you should do if you are stuck in a bathroom. At that moment all innocence of what I thought my three-year-old possessed was gone.”
Here is the photo the concerned mother shared to articulate her point:
Yes, we are living in a world — in a country — where we are teaching children drills in the case of a shooting, instead of taking the guns out of the hands of villains. In Obama’s eight years in office, he has had to address the country after a shooting 14 other times, while ZERO new laws have passed to combat the problem.
Feeley insists politicians specifically take a good look at the image of her young daughter. She wrote:
“This is your child, your children, your grandchildren, your great grand children and future generations to come. They will live their lives and grow up in this world based on your decisions. They are barely 3 and they will hide in bathroom stalls standing on top of toilet seats. I do not know what will be harder for them? Trying to remain quiet for an extended amount of time or trying to keep their balance without letting a foot slip below the stall door?”
While visiting the families of the Pulse victims, President Obama himself expressed a similar sentiment targeted at elected leaders who vote against gun control reform. He said:
“Those who defend the easy accessibility of assault weapons should meet these families and explain why that makes sense.”
I couldn’t agree more. It’s been terrifying to watch the president, the most powerful man in the world, be so helpless when it comes to something as important as gun violence. If anything, hopefully this depressing photo will open a few people’s eyes to what guns are doing to the country.
