Chewbacca Mom Is Charging For Autographs Now Because We Live In An Unfair, Cruel World

I’m not sure what’s worse. The fact that Candace Payne, AKA “Chewbacca Mom” is now charging for photos and autographs or the fact that people are actually forking over the $20 for her signature. Since her video went viral, she has received over $420,000 worth of ‘rewards,‘ including an all expense paid vacation to Disney World and a full scholarship for her entire family.  This is of course making the internet quite angry, because this woman has gotten all of this without having any real talent, nor have these gifts come from hard work, or any work at all.

At the Fan Expo in Dallas, Texas, Chewbacca Mom’s booth was situated right next to Jack Gleeson’s, according to TMZ. You know Gleeson as King Joffrey in Game Of Thrones and you’ve got to admit that this guy is talented. It’s hard to play someone as disliked as his character in Game Of Thrones, but he really pulls in off. He has talent and training. I can’t imagine how intense and exhausting shooting this series must have been. It must have taken quite a toll on the cast and crew, including Gleeson.

So, right next to his booth was Candace Payne, whose success has come from merely putting on a Chewbacca mask and having an immature laughing fit about it. I’m fine with her doing this. I’m even fine with this video getting the attention it has, it’s kind of charming or whatever. I know people like to share easy, silly videos that easy the pain of the mundane everyday we all suffer through. However, she simply does not deserve all of this money and praise. It’s bullshit.

Comedian and activist Franchesca Ramsey nails it in this Facebook post she made in reaction to Payne’s scholarship.

“Ok. The video was cute. But CUTE at best. But I’m not sure how a cute video earns free college for your and your whole family. Here’s an idea….maybe give full college scholarships to people who actually NEED them and have worked hard to earn them? I can’t.

Edited to clarify: “doesn’t deserve a scholarship” wasn’t the best choice of words. everyone deserves the chance to go to college if they want to. My frustration is with the HOW of this scholarship choice more than who.”

I couldn’t agree more.

My mom works at Disney World. Whenever we speak on the phone, I ask about celebrity sightings at the park. The other day, when I asked this, she let out a deep sigh. “Chewbacca Mom was at the park today. Her whole family is getting VIP service, all-expenses paid.” We get excited to see celebrities, well some celebrities, because we have been effected by their talents. We are impressed by them. They are usually impressive individuals.

We are now it the time of viral “success” where talentless people like Payne can turn on the camera on their phone, point it towards them, and bring in hundreds of thousands of dollars. Meanwhile, many a millennial with tens of thousands of dollars of student loan debt, can’t get a job that would allow them to pay it off. These are the sad times in which we live, folks.
