Kanye West’s New Single Is So New It Doesn’t Even Have A Title Yet

You know, sometimes between Kanye West’s epic Twitter feed and just general public persona it’s hard to remember that he makes good music now and again. If you’ve been looking forward to the Cruel Summer sequel, Kanye’s new single will be your new summer jam. It’s so new that it doesn’t have a title yet, though while premiering the track on 92.3  during the Big Boy morning show Friday morning, the host suggested they should call it “Champions” or “Round and Round.” Those work for me.

Sample lyric number one: “White people think I’m radical.” Let’s just call it the first decent piece of music to come out of Kanye’s crazy brain in a very long time. It’s also about the company Kanye keeps — this track features Gucci Mane, recently released from prison. Sample lyric number two: “Now that Gucci home, it’s over for you Gucci clones.” Thank god.

Big Sean, Yo Gotti, 2 Chainz, Travi$ Scott, Quavo, and Desiigner (the newest G.O.O.D artist) are also featured on the single. This track is the first one from Kanye’s upcoming Cruel Winter album, and it’s super produced — between the synths, the sweet little hook, and ass-dropping bass, I will happily bounce around to this song for the next few days, and I don’t care what anyone else says.

Kanye told Big Boy that he’s been knocking the beat around for some time. “I had the basic beat for a year and a half. It sounded right for this project,” he said. He told Big Boy that he and the artists he collaborated with didn’t know what they were going to get into when they started recording. Kanye said, “It’s just the energy in the studio, whoever is coming by. And then we get to talk about who would sound nice on the track.” Well, whatever they were doing that day worked.

Even 2 Chainz sounds good. Cruel Winter is the long awaited follow-up to Cruel Summer, which was released by G.O.O.D. Music last year. Cruel Summer debuted at number one on the Billboard charts and sold about 205,000 copies in the first week. With a first single like this untitled one, Cruel Winter will probably do similarly well.

I miss this kind of Kanye collaboration. I am no expert, just a fan and dedicated lover of hip hop, but Life of Pablo was just sad and depressing. It was steeped in so much Kanye-ness — the release of Yeezy 3 and a pretty disturbing (or hysterical) public meltdown on Twitter sort of overshadowed the music, which might have been a good thing. This winter was sort of Kanye’s cruel winter — he looked like a jerk. This new tune is proof he hasn’t completely lost his mind. Although, he is still Kanye after all.

Either way, they aren’t messing around this time. I’m going to go listen to Gucci’s verse again now. See you when I’m sick of the track.
