Gina Rodriguez For President: 7 Reasons Why We Love The ‘Jane The Virgin’ Star

Whenever actress Gina Rodriguez pops up in my feed, it’s always for an overwhelmingly positive reason. It’s either an article celebrating her accomplishments or someone is commenting on her generousness. Back in 2014, The Hollywood Reporter dubbed Rodriguez “The Next Big Thing” and they weren’t wrong. She won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Television Series back in January, and I have since watched her moving acceptance speech on repeat. Here are 7 reasons Gina is just as charming and lovable as her character Jane from Jane The Virgin.

She gave her Golden Globes dress to a teenager so that she could wear it to her prom.

Back in January, when awards season was in full swing, a fan from Buffalo, New York, tweeted at Gina, with little expectation of a reply I’m sure.

Rodriguez actually replied.

Rodriguez paid for the alterations to be made and sent her a private message on the day of.

“I’m so excited for you. Dance like no one’s watching, have the time of your life. Enjoy every single moment. Make smart decisions and let loose, girl. You look beautiful.”

This is such a kind thing to do. I’m sure that dress was just hanging in a huge closet somewhere and now it was given new life and made for an unforgettable experience for Jessica.

She advocates for other actors to “love yourself first.”

At a SAG-AFTRA Foundation panel at New York City’s SVA Theatre, Rodriguez touched on her early days as an actress according to Backstage.

“The actor also discussed her time studying drama at NYU Tisch School of the Arts. While there, she was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid gland at 19. “I thought I was cursed,” she said before adding she didn’t consider herself an ingénue type for many years. It took practicing self-love and focusing on her craft to change that notion. She encouraged young actors to “drop the knife” instead of figuratively turning it on themselves. “Love yourself first, mama,” she emphasized.”

She gives credit where credit is due.

CW, the Network that Jane The Virgin calls home, has been making awesome strides when it comes to representing women in their programing. According to the LA Times

“Rodriguez praised the network for making shows “that are transforming the way we look at our culture, the way we look at women in the industry.””Our network has a lineup of so many shows led by women and run by women, which is incredible”…Both “Jane the Virgin” and “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” have female show runners (Jennie Snyder Urman and Aline Brosh McKenna, respectively).”

We’ve still got a long way to go, but calling out improvements like this is critical.

She shaved part of her head for a role and made a badass post about it.

This one speaks for itself.

She slayed Lil Wayne’s “A Milli” on Lip Sync Battle.

She rapped in 2012’s Sundance hit Filly Brown, but those of us that haven’t seen this movie were quite surprised to see this side of her.

She is an immigrant who is loud and proud about it.

She’s relatable AF.

She’s famous for being an actress because she’s damn good at it. She’s utterly charismatic and charming through her truthful portrayal as ‘Jane’ and therefore Gina has our attention.

She’s doing some really great things with all this attention. I’m excited to follow her career as well as follow her on Twitter.
