Why Do Women Like Gay Porn? There’s A Surprising But Logical Reason So Many Straight Girls Are Into It

Porn has a relatively well-deserved reputation for misogyny and the overall objectification of women, both in terms of the abuse female porn stars face from within the industry, and the shame and stigma society heaps on them for what they (for the most part) choose to do. And the internet-at-large might be a cesspool for a wide range of genres of porn to suit every taste and fetish, but there isn’t a whole lot of choice when it comes to porn that features sexually empowered women. Which is why, according to a recent study by Dr. Lucy Neville, a senior lecturer in Criminology at Middlesex University, a lot of women prefer gay male porn to straight porn.

The study reflects findings and theories by other researchers as well as internet trends at large. While the relationship between female sexual empowerment and male-on-male porn isn’t exactly obvious, just hold on — we’ll get there.

Neville, a writer of erotica, first became interested in the topic of women’s fascination with gay male porn when author George R.R. Martin (maybe you’ve heard of him) revealed female readers were writing to him, begging him to include gay male sex scenes in his work. To conduct the study, she used an online questionnaire and found that about 82 percent of the 275 women who responded preferred gay male to heterosexual porn. She used their responses on the questionnaire, as well as on-one interviews and focus groups, to figure out the appeal of gay porn to women.

As it turns out, one of the most popular lines of reasoning of the 82 percent of women who prefer male-on-male porn is pretty feminist.

According to Neville in an interview with PsyPost, a lot of women’s disdain with straight porn is their perceptions that it undermines female pleasure, is catered to a male perspective,, and even that it focuses on the female body in an almost exploitative manner while featuring “ugly” men:

“The way [women] perceived women as being treated and exploited in heterosexual porn, the invisibility of female pleasure, the fact that identifying with the female actress made them less able to enjoy the eroticism of looking, and the fact that most heterosexual porn invited them to view the sex acts occurring from a ‘male’ perspective – noting the way that the camera tended to linger on female anatomy and that men in heterosexual porn were ‘ugly and out of focus at best, and just a disembodied cock at worst.’”

Further, Neville told PsyPost that, in contrast with heterosexual porn, in gay porn, “neither party can automatically be decreed to be submissive or dominant simply by virtue of penetration.”

In this sense, gay porn has an inherent element of equality that traditional heterosexual porn lacks. It’s not that all gay porn is devoid of power dynamics (where would be the fun in that shit?), but since all bodies involved are basically capable of the same acts, whatever acts they choose to engage in together, even if they involve dramatically disparate power levels of the parties involved, have an underlying note of choice to them. And equality in all its forms, whether it’s equal pay or gay porn, is pretty damn attractive to anyone used to being on the receiving end of sexism, aka pretty much all women.

And who knows, maybe more and more women opting for gay porn over straight porn, will take us one step closer to leaving society’s heteronormative culture in the dust, even if only within the realm of adult entertainment. Female empowerment and support for gay rights? Hot dudes having sex? Here for all of it. That’s a good day for anyone.

But still, at the end of the day, another major reason so many women enjoy male-on-male porn isn’t exactly relevant to feminism. As one participant in Neville’s questionnaire put it: “I am attracted to males so seeing two of ’em get it on together is like: BOOM, TWICE THE SEXY!”
