‘Orange Is The New Black’ Season 4 Trailer: 7 Things it Tells Us About The New Season

Summer is hastening its way towards us and as your faves like Scandal and Empire and Game Of Thrones wrap it up and put themselves to bed, lighter, fluffier fare rushes in to fill the void. Everyone’s favorite show about prison, Orange Is The New Black, has always felt like a summer show because of its light hand on a subject that’s pretty fucking heavy. But as you can see from the full trailer for season 4 of OITNB, it looks like it’s about to get a whole lot darker. Prison isn’t actually summer camp but with shittier uniforms and finally, finally, the show is addressing it thusly.

“Pain’s always there, but suffering is a choice,” says Pennsatucky, summing up the best possible way to look at incarceration but also life. Piper also looks like she’s had enough and Red appears to finally be at her wit’s end, too. There’s not a lot of happy in here, but for a show that’s dealing with prison, that seems more than fair. Jenji Kohan likes to keep us on our toes, so nothing of great worth is revealed in this traile, but that’s the whole point. Here’s a few things we noticed.

Piper is most likely in trouble.

Remember how at the end of last season, Piper asserted herself as the head of her prison-panty business and alienated her entire staff? Remember how that was maybe the worst move she could’ve done? Looks like that power play is going to come back to bite her in the ass, as it should. Piper’s the worst. She’s always been the worst. Her come-uppance is long overdue.

The prison industrial complex is real.

Litchfield has always seemed kinda cushy for a prison, but now there’s overcrowding and a C.O shortage and inmates everywhere and a new world order that doesn’t look like it’s very good news for anyone. For a show that has made prison look like nothing more than a very strict summer camp, this better mean that there will be darkness. I want darkness. Prison isn’t summer camp. Fuck shit up.

Taystee has a desk job.

Looks like she’s leveled up and is taking dictation and messages for Caputo. Also, she appears to have the same trouble with telephones that the rest of us do, because prisoners — they’re just like us!

Judy King is gonna be incredible.

Remember how they teased a new character at the end of last season? Like, a Martha Stewart-esque lady who did some white collar shit and end up in the pokey? She’s here now. She’s a redhead, her name is Judy King, she’s got a syrupy drawl and will either be eaten alive or take over. Who knows! I don’t! It’s a trailer! I’m not supposed to know anything, because that’s the point of a trailer!
This new CO looks like a real dong and he’s got it out for Red.

See this guy? He’s one of the new COs. He appears to have it out for Red and he also appears to be a real dick.  In fact, all of the new COs look terrible and mean, just like in real life, maybe, right?

Sophia is still in the SHU.

I forgot that Caputo put Sophia in the SHU for her own protection, but it looks like she’s still there. And, from the looks of her face, she’s not too thrilled bout it According to the Hollywood Reporter, this storyline is meant to somewhat accurately reflect the way that transgender inmates are routinely treated in prison.

Your favorite intersectional feminist, Matt McGorry, is MIA.

Bennett is nowhere to be seen, but that’s probably because he’s working with Joe Biden and making sponsored tweets about male tears, sensitivity and Axe Body spray.

The show is back on June 17th.
If you watched the trailer all the way to the end, that’s what you’d know!
