Chyna, WWE Wrestler & Reality Star, Dies at 46

WWE wrestler and erstwhile reality star Chyna, aka Joan Marie Laurer has died. The AP reports that Chyna was found dead in her Redondo Beach apartment late Wednesday night.

A friend had gone Wednesday to check on Chyna, whose real name is Joan Marie Laurer, after she had failed to answer her phone for a few days, Redondo Beach police said in a statement. The friend told the 911 operator that Laurer wasn’t breathing.

The 46-year-old Laurer was dead when officers arrived, police said.
Chyna enjoyed a brief bout of fame in the mid-90s as a wrestler and became the only female undefeated champion in World Wrestling Federation history, according to CNN.  After her wrestling career faded, Chyna was a staple on many of VH1’s reality television offerings including The Surreal Life and Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew — two shows part of the trash-reality boom in the early 2000s that capitalized on featuring “past their prime” celebrities and throwing them into a really nice house in Los Angeles and seeing what sticks.

Remembering Chyna for her time on those shows feels inconsiderate to her legacy.

This clip from MTV True Life is a better way to remember her by. Rest in peace, Chyna.
