These Photos Of Two Male Lions Having Sex Is Further Proof That There’s Still Nothing “Unnatural” About Homosexuality

Award-winning photographer Nicole Cambré was snapping away on a safari in Botswana when she spotted two male lions having sex. The lions were playfully nuzzling each other and playing and generally being adorable, snuggly, dorky kitties in the bodies of hulking predators. In one of Cambré’s photos, one of the lions appears to be mounting his buddy, because what’s a little dry humping between friends?

Cambré told the Huffington Post:

According to our guide they had only started their behavior that same week. These intruder males had pushed out the resident males earlier in the year and the other female lions had headed into the Mopani woodlands, an area difficult to access with a safari vehicle. Only one lioness was seen in the centre of the concession where the male lions were and the lions showed no interest in the lioness leading to the assumption that she may have been pregnant. One of the lions was wearing a collar and our guide thought that they may have crossed from Namibia. It is the first time I have seen homosexual behavior in lions but when reading about it upon my return, it is not that uncommon. With the light just around sunset, it gave some spectacular images.

There’s absolutely nothing unnatural about homosexuality in the animal kingdom, not to mention bisexuality or non-monogamy. Although we didn’t really need any scientists to assure us that gay sex among animals isn’t a harbinger of the apocalypse, it is interesting to note that studies have shown that it’s extremely common. Evolutionary biologist Dr. Nathan Bailey told the Telegraph, “Same-sex behaviors – courtship, mounting or parenting – are traits that may have been shaped by natural selection, a basic mechanism of evolution that occurs over successive generations, but our review of studies also suggests that these same-sex behaviors might act as selective forces in and of themselves.”

Of course, beyond biological imperatives, sex and physical intimacy is just fun. Whether or not these two lions were actually doin’ it or just playing around, they know what’s up.
