Kesha Surprises Coachella, Shows Her “True Colors”

She’s baaaaack! Kesha made a surprise appearance at the Coachella Music Festival in Indio, California this weekend, taking the stage during producer Zedd’s set to sing his song “True Colors.” (Confession: at first, I assumed she sang the Cyndi Lauper song “True Colors,” because I am old and do not know what a “Zedd” is.)

This was Kesha’s first performance in months, as she’s been locked in a highly contentious legal battle with Sony Music Group after accusing her longtime producer, Dr. Luke, of sexual assault and psychological abuse. Kesha wants to break all ties with her abuse and be released from her contract with Dr. Luke’s label, Kemosabe Records, but a judge recently ruled against her request for an injunction. While still under Dr. Luke’s thumb, Kesha is barred from recording with any other producers unless otherwise agreed upon, and regardless, cannot continue to make music without him profiting in some way.

For now, surprise performances like this are Kesha’s best way to keep people interested in her career until a this mess with Dr. Luke can be resolved. Fingers crossed — for her sake primarily, but also for her fans — Kesha is freed sooner rather than later.
