Alison Porter Singing “Cry Baby” On “The Voice” Is No Janis But It’s Not Pissing Us Off Either

At least once a month I take a knee and imagine a world in which Janis Joplin is still alive. In these fantasies the world is rainy and warm and Joplin is recording vulnerable-yet-strong love ballads with her powerhouse voice. Although my visions still haven’t come to fruition (I’m still hoping), the talented singer Alison Porter – who is currently a contestant on “The Voice” – gave a taste of that fantasy with her cover of Janis Joplin’s song “Cry Baby.”

Obviously she can’t truly replace or replicate the queenly levels of melodic grit that Joplin mastered, but Porter demonstrated indisputable vocal chops and commitment in her cover of “Cry Baby.” She may not be the resurrected ghost of Janis Joplin I dream of, but she’s a damn good singer regardless.
