Hillary Clinton & Bill De Blasio Make Super Cringe-y Joke About “Colored People Time”

Over the weekend, Hillary Clinton and New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio were on hand for the city’s annual Inner Circle Dinner, which brings together local politicians for an evening of food, pretty boring dinner conversation and super awkward onstage bits. Clinton and De Blasio’s skit, delivered alongside Hamilton’s Leslie Odom Jr., however, brought the audience’s polite chuckles to a halt with this, uh, vaguely racist exchange:

Clinton (joking about De Blasio’s late endorsement): I just have to say thanks for the endorsement, Bill. Took you long enough.

De Blasio: Sorry Hillary, I was running on C.P. time. [C.P. time is typically understood to mean “colored people time,” a stereotype usually invoked by black people when a person or event is behind schedule.]

Odom Jr.: That’s not — I don’t like jokes like that, Bill.

Clinton (clarifying): Cautious politician time … I’ve been there.

A racially squicky joke that ends in a punchline which subtly references Clinton’s own history of being cautious with endorsements, like her late-arriving support for gay marriage?! I can’t help but wonder if this bit was written by a secret Bernie Sanders supporter out to make Clinton look foolish.
