Kesha Says She Was Offered “Freedom” If She Retracted Dr. Luke Rape Accusations

On Sunday, Kesha posted a selfie to Instagram captioned with a new troubling allegation related to her contentious contract dispute with longtime producer Dr. Luke (aka Lukasz Gottwald) and Sony Music Group. Kesha has accused Gottwald of raping her and verbally and psychologically abusing her over the many years she’s worked with him, and has spent the last two years trying to get out of her recording contract with his label Kemosabe Records, a Sony imprint. In her Instagram post, Kesha alleges that she was offered a way out of her contract in exchange for retracting the rape allegations and saying she lied about the abuse claims.

In February, a judge ruled against Kesha’s request for injunction to allow her to record outside of her contract with Kemosabe/Sony, saying that breaking the contract would cause irreparable damage to the companies involved. Sony, meanwhile, has said that Kesha can record with other producers instead of Dr. Luke, but that still means Kemosabe makes money off her work. On March 20, Kesha’s lawyers appealed the decision, saying that forcing Kesha to continue making music under Dr. Luke’s label was tantamount to “slavery.”

Gottwald has denied ever assaulting or abusing Kesha, and says the pop star concocted the accusations in an attempt to get out of her contract so she could score a more lucrative record deal. His lawyer issued the following statement in regards to Kesha’s latest Instagram post:

The Court repeatedly stated Kesha is already free to record without Dr. Luke, and that she had not presented any facts supporting her claims. That’s because all the evidence — including Kesha’s own videotaped sworn testimony — show her allegations are false. The only thing Kesha is not free to do is to continue to lie about Dr. Luke through publicity stunts and outrageous smears, ignoring the fact that by her own free will she went to work and entered into new contracts with Dr. Luke years after this “incident” supposedly happened. Her goal all along has been solely personal enrichment by seeking to break contracts that brought her success and millions so she can enter into more lucrative ones. We look forward to our day in court holding Kesha accountable for her lies.

Kesha has said that she only denied being assaulted by Dr. Luke in that videotaped sworn testimony – given during a separate, earlier legal dispute with her ex-managers – because he threatened her and her family. If anything, the fact that allegations of sexual assault were even raised during that prior legal dispute suggests that Kesha had been making them in private years before ever going public.
