Google Is Really Sorry About That April Fools’ Gmail Joke, Y’all

Everyone knows that April Fools’ is an awful holiday. Even the most gullible among us are on the lookout for so-called pranks and assorted tomfoolery, so it’s almost impossible to actually pull a good April Fools’ joke any more, if there ever was such a thing. And if you do pull one off, well, everyone’s gonna be pissed.

Google learned this the hard way when engineers added a jokey feature to Gmail last night, the “Send + Mic Drop” button. This offered the option to automatically insert a GIF of a Minion dropping a mic into your replies, but alas, it was way too close to the regular “Send” button and users were accidentally dropping mics all over their important emails. Plus, some people just really freaking hate the Minions, those little gibberish-spouting characters from the Despicable Me franchise. Either way, no one had time for this Gmail nonsense, and Google yanked the feature today, saying:

“Well, it looks like we pranked ourselves this year. Due to a bug, the Mic Drop feature inadvertently caused more headaches than laughs. We’re truly sorry. The feature has been turned off. If you are still seeing it, please reload your Gmail page.”
