Woman Shot By Four-Year-Old Son After Bragging Of His Gun Use On Facebook

Another day, another kid shooting someone by accident! This time, 31-year-old Jamie Gilt of Jacksonville, Florida was shot in the back by her four-year-old son, from the backseat of her pickup truck, while she was driving. The bullet went through the front seat and then through Gilt’s back and out of her torso. Gilt survived the shooting, but is now finding herself the target of criticism for her social media posts.

Just a few days earlier, Gilt was on Facebook bragging that said four-year-old was shooting targets. On a post featuring a photo saying that guns weren’t the answer but calling 911 is, Gilt noted that criminals might change their plans if they knew they’d get shot if they broke in. In the comments section, she stated “Thanks. All of ours know how to shoot too. Even my 4-year-old gets jacked up to target shoot the .22.”

She also, ironically, runs another Facebook page called “Jamie Gilt for Gun Sense.” Gun sense, in this context, apparently means leaving a loaded and unlocked gun in the backseat with your toddler son!

Check out these memes from both pages.

Yes! Clearly Jamie cares very much about the safety of her child, which I guess is why police also found that the boy was not strapped into his booster seat when they arrived, and why she left a loaded, unlocked gun in the backseat with him. You know, because SAFETY. And protecting her child. Because she is a “responsible gun owner.” And gun control is stupid and unnecessary!

Even freaking Antonin Scalia, who was the worst, noted that there are restrictions on the Second Amendment, just as there are on the First. I’m not sure where in the Second Amendment it says child neglect is totes cool as long as it involves an gun, but I could be reading it wrong. Is that what is meant by “well-regulated militia?” Because it doesn’t sound like it.

It seems a little odd to me. We have childproof caps on Tylenol bottles, they have weirdly boring-looking playgrounds made of plastic, kids trick-or-treat during daylight now…every effort has been made to keep kids safe these days, except this one thing! And quite frankly, I think a kid is a lot more likely to get hurt with a gun than a slide made out of metal! Call me crazy!

Think about this for a second–Gilt would be more likely to get into legal trouble for child neglect if she left the kid in the car alone for five minutes while running into a convenience store, than for leaving him around a loaded, unlocked gun. Police aren’t even sure if they’re going to charge her with anything yet!

I am so, so tired of writing these articles. I’m so tired of it. All I want is to never write an article like this again. While a part of me is somewhat relieved that Gilt was the victim rather than another child, as is often the case (see here, and here…and those are just from this year), it’s heartbreaking that this kid is going to have to go through life knowing he shot his own mother.

Gun owners, if you want people like me to believe that gun control is unnecessary because you’re so very responsible, than stop being so freaking irresponsible. At least be as safe with your guns around kids as you would be with a can of Raid or a bottle of medication. Is that really too much to ask?
