Transgender actress Mya Taylor just made history by becoming the first transgender performer to win a high-profile Hollywood award.

Independent Spirit Awards recognize lower budget films (budgets with less than $20 Million).

Taylor won an Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female for her performance in the film “Tangerine.” In addition to the Spirit award, she also one a Gotham Award for Breakthrough Actor.

The news is bittersweet considering the successful film snagged ZERO nominations for the Oscars this year, much to the dismay of fans and prominent critics.

During her acceptance speech, Taylor said:

“There is transgender talent, there’s very beautiful transgender talent. So you better get it out there and put it in your next movie.”
