Dear Bernie Bros: Just FYI, Jill Stein Exists, If You Need To Vote For A “Political Outsider”

Bernie Bros, it has been brought to my attention that if some of you can’t vote for Bernie Sanders, you might vote for Donald Trump in the November election on the basis of both of them being “political outsiders.” As a queer person with a uterus, this is one of the most horrifying things I’ve ever heard in my life, at least as far as politics go. What you’re telling me is that some of you are willing to vote for someone whose political views are diametrically opposed to everything your favored candidate believes in on the grounds of being outside the political establishment, yes?

Shall I assume that you haven’t heard of Jill Stein?

Well, if not, Jill Stein is the Green Party candidate this election year. She’s a physician with a long history of political activism for the environment, healthcare, and campaign finance reform. Here’s her platform:

  • Transition to 100 percent clean energy by 2030
  • Protect unions
  • Establish jobs and access to housing, water, utilities as human rights
  • Establish a single-payer healthcare system
  • Abolish student debt, make college free, and end the privatization of schools
  • Institute a $15 minimum wage
  • Break up the biggest banks and democratize the Federal Reserve
  • Make corporations and the wealthy pay a fairer tax rate
  • End police brutality and mass incarceration
  • Expand women’s and LGBT rights
  • Create a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants
  • Legalize hemp
  • Protect the free internet
  • Establish foreign policy based on diplomacy
  • Stop US support and arms sales to human rights abusers
  • Abolish corporate personhood
  • Establish a constitutional right to vote

See? You don’t have to betray your liberal ideals in order to vote for a political outsider if Bernie doesn’t get the nomination! As a bonus, if enough of you vote for Jill Stein, maybe, just maybe, we could break up the two-party system and get funding for the Green Party in 2020.

I have a sneaking suspicion that some of you might not want to vote for a Green Party candidate based on viability or electability or the chances of actually winning, but after all, “viability” is a concept Sanders supporters scoff at – right?
