Emma Watson’s Taking A Year Off Of Acting To Learn More About Feminism

Emma Watson told bell hooks in an interview in Paper magazine that she’s going to be taking a year off of acting to focus on learning more about feminism. “My own personal task is to read a book a week, and also to read [another] book a month as part of my book club. I’m doing a huge amount of reading and study just on my own,” she said.

Watson is referring to her Twitter-based book club, Our Shared Self. She said that she had considered going to university for a year to focus on gender studies, but that “I realised that I was learning so much by being on the ground and just speaking with people and doing my reading.” She added, “I want to do a lot of listening.”

She’ll also be working on HeForShe, her initiative to get men involved in activism for gender equality. Between studying, running the book club, doing on-the-ground work, and running HeForShe, she’ll be busy, in other words – we won’t just find her huddled in a corner surrounded Hermione-like by enormous stacks of books by this time next year.

Godspeed, Emma! I suggest picking up Susan Stryker and Leslie Feinberg.
