Pope Francis Calls Trump “Not Christian,” Says Birth Control May Be OK In Zika-Affected Regions
Pope Francis wrapped up his tour of Mexico today, holding a mass in Juarez and specifically remembering victims of “forced migration,” including women who have been“unjustly robbed of their lives.” Francis said that migrants “are the brothers and sisters of those expelled by poverty and violence, by drug trafficking and criminal organizations.”
On the papal plane, Francis questioned Donald Trump’s faith, saying, “A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian. This is not in the Gospel.” Francis admitted that he had not heard Trump’s views on immigration from the horse’s mouth and that he’d grant Trump the benefit of the doubt, but added that “I’d just say that this man is not Christian if he said it this way.”
Trump claimed last week that Pope Francis just doesn’t understand the issue of immigration in America, going so far as to say that the Pope is Mexico’s puppet: “I think Mexico got him to do it because Mexico wants to keep the border just the way it is because they’re making a fortune and we’re losing.” Which, you know – I’m not sure that Trump understands how the papacy works. A Vatican spokesman pointed out that Francis regularly speaks to migration crises around the world, and has always advocated for compassionate immigration policies. Now, of course, Trump has lashed out at Pope Francis, calling him “disgraceful” for questioning his faith. Again: Really doesn’t understand how the papacy works, or words, for that matter.
Francis also told reporters that birth control in Zika-affected regions could be condoned in order to prevent a potentially dangerous pregnancy and birth. He ruled out the possibility of abortion, but said that contraception would be a “lesser evil.”
