Taraji P. Henson’s Fantastic Joke About Coldplay Was Actually An Accident
Like so many rapt television viewers, Taraji P. Henson was overwhelmed with…something while watching Sunday’s Super Bowl 50 halftime show. Her since-deleted tweet and Instagram post about Coldplay’s half-time show performance that accidentally referred to Chris Martin & co. as Maroon 5 sadly wasn’t a carefully timed and beautifully executed joke. Like many poor judgement calls, it was because of alcohol, natch.
The presumed read that is calling Coldplay Maroon 5 is beautiful in its simplicity: here’s one group of bland, earnest, limpid white men singing mainstream rock music and look, they’re pretty much just like another! But, Henson confirmed to ET that this wasn’t a pointed commentary on the sameness of all sad-dude rock bands that fill arenas a lot of feedback and some shitty falsetto.
“I don’t know if you know how it goes down in the suites,” she said. “They put a lot of drinks in there — Kool-Aid, lemonade, iced tea. I mixed it all and I sat there and I’m sitting with people who drank the Kool-Aid as well.”
She really didn’t know who was performing, but everybody with her agreed that yep, that was probably Maroon 5, so onward and upward she went.
After being inundated with texts from Mary J. Blige, her cousins, her grandma and basically anyone who had access to her phone number and Twitter at the same damn time, she took the post down and tweeted:
Mistake or not, we agree. We stand in solidarity with you, Taraji.
