As any casual reader of this website is aware, Adnan Syed’s post-conviction hearing is happening in Baltimore right now. Over the weekend, the family of the victim, Hae Min Lee, released a statement that addresses the internet detectives and armchair gumshoes spawned after Sarah Koenig drew focus to the case in the first season of Serial. From the Guardian:
“The events of this past week have reopened wounds few can imagine,” the letter from the victim’s family begins, before alluding to the many people who have become fascinated with the case since it was retold in a hugely popular podcast, Serial.
“It remains hard to see so many run to defend someone who committed a horrible crime, who destroyed our family, who refuses to accept responsibility, when so few are willing to speak up for Hae,” they wrote. “She stood up for what was right, regardless of popular opinion.”
The Lee family declined to participate in Serial, and have been absent from the post-conviction hearing, most likely preferring to put this entire debacle behind them and move on with their lives — a difficult task considering the media frenzy around their daughter’s murder and the scores of faceless commenters clamoring for justice for the man they think killed their daughter.
Syed’s post-conviction hearing continues in Baltimore today. Look for our recap later this evening.
