Helen Mirren Thinks It’s “Unfair To Attack The Academy” About Diversity Issues
Uh oh. During an interview with Channel 4 News, Helen Mirren said that the Academy wasn’t to blame for the fact that all of the acting nominations went to white people this year.
“I think it’s unfair to attack the Academy; it just so happened this year it went that way.”
I think Mirren is wrong on this point; the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences seems dreadfully underdeveloped when it comes to promoting equality in terms of gender and racial diversity within their ranks. It’s a problem they can fix with some effort, which, based on her quickness to respond, is evident in current president Cheryl Boone Isaacs’ statement about how they intend to fix it going forward.
But watch to the whole interview with Helen Mirren before you jump up her crack; she’s not saying the lack of diversity at The Oscars is not problematic, rather that it’s the symptom of a larger illness, and I completely agree.
“The issue we need to be looking at is what happens with the film before it gets to The Oscars, what kind of films are made, and the way in which they’re cast. And the scripts—go all the way back to the writing of the scripts. It’s those things that are much more influential, ultimately, than who stands there with an Oscar.”
