If You’re Gay And You Want To Be A Roller Coaster Tycoon, Now You Can

If their previews are any indication, the next installment of the Roller Coaster Tycoon franchise, Planet Coaster, will feature LGBT families. For example, check out the gay couple strolling through at 0:25 in this trailer:

This is notable–I can’t think of any other construction/management simulation games that have specifically featured gay characters, and up until around 2010, there were hardly any video games at all that featured LGBT non-player characters as just a part of the environment (I’m thinking Fables III). There were plenty of games that had queer or trans playable characters, and NPC’s here and there who were LGBT, but by and large it’s only ever been an outstanding smattering, not LGBT people being represented as a normal, unfeatured, unnotable part of a game’s world.

And as much as inclusion for LGBT characters with storylines is great because the player gets to know and empathize with those characters, there’s a lot to appreciate about just having queer characters in the background. The slogan has gone, “We’re here, we’re queer, get used to it,” and in the world of video games, Planet Coaster’s nonchalant inclusion of LGBT families is precisely the gaming world getting used to it.
