Diversity Of SAG Award Winners Emphasizes Oscar’s Missives

The 22nd Screen Actors Guild Awards showed us all that diversity can and does win. During a time when this years Oscars nominations have caused a nationwide discussion on their lack of diversity in nominees – causing the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag to go viral, the SAG Award wins from Saturday night proves that it is possible and necessary to reward extraordinary talent across all barriers.

Laverne Cox even exclaimed after Orange Is The New Black snagged an ensemble win:

“Those awards shows where they’re not as diverse, they can do the work to work harder. I think it’s important to understand that these things are systemic—when we talk about racism, institutional racism—that these things are systemic and the systems must change if we want to really effect cultural change.”

Television has been notoriously more diverse than Hollywood for some time and this contributed in part to the increased wins for people of color at the SAG Awards.

But this is no excuse for the glaring disconnect of how badly the Oscars has been with diverse talent recognition. Doesn’t everyone deserve a fair shot? I mean even Obama addressed the #OscarsSoWhite controversy.
