Ted Cruz Enlisted A Guy Who Wants To Execute Abortion Providers To Head Pro-Life Task Force
In hopes of taking back some of the evangelical voters Trump has been reeling in, Ted Cruz has lately been fiercely promoting his anti-choice credentials. He’s hoping to be known as the candidate to vote for if you want people to die from self-induced abortions!
Thus, he has started a cool new coalition, “Pro-Lifers For Ted Cruz.” Heading up this organization is veteran anti-LGBT bigot Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council–which you may recall previously employed child molester, adulterer, and woman-beater Josh Duggar! Fun!
One of the ten co-chairs of the group is a fella by the name of Troy Newman. Newman is the president of the anti-choice group Operation Rescue.
From Newman’s bio on the “Pro-Lifers from Ted Cruz” site:
Troy Newman is the president of Operation Rescue, one of the leading pro-life Christian activist organizations in the nation and a founding board member for the Center for Medial (sic) Progress. He has been involved in the pro-life community for over 20 years, starting in 1991 as the Operation Rescue West president. He is also a published author, having written Their Blood Cries Out and his most recent book Abortion Free.
The Center for Medical Progress, by the way, is the group responsible for those bullshit-laden Planned Parenthood videos. You know, the ones people are currently being indicted for?
According to Right Wing Watch, which has reviewed Newman’s books, he has some pretty interesting ideas about how he’d like to see us handle abortion in this country.
In “Their Blood Cries Out,” written in 2000 and revised in 2003, Newman lays out the case for churches to oppose abortion rights, saying that by failing to follow what he says is the biblical response to abortion — executing abortion providers and treating women who have abortions as “murderers” — the country is mired in “bloodguilt” and is awaiting the judgment of God. In the meantime, Newman writes, the U.S. has experienced “warnings” from God about legal abortion, including the HIV/AIDS epidemic and the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
What a peach! Sending women to jail for having abortions, and executing abortion providers. Because what’s more pro-life than the death penalty, amirite? As far as abortion causing AIDS and 9/11, one does have to wonder what Newman thinks caused the polio epidemic and Pearl Harbor, given that both of those things, as well as myriad other tragedies, occurred well before abortion was legal. I bet he has some fascinating theories.
What’s even more pro-life about Troy Newman is this statement he made out after Dr. William Harrison was murdered by an anti-choice activist in Florida!
“We are thankful that this man will never again have the opportunity to kill any more babies, hurt any more women, or cause any more human misery on this Earth,” said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman. “In the end, God always gets the last word. Our Christian faith informs us that one day we will all have to stand before God and give an account for our lives. Without faith in Christ, the outlook for Mr. Harrison’s meeting with his Maker is grim. We pray other aging abortionists around the nation will not follow Harrison’s example, but will instead find repentance and forgiveness for their bloodguilt through the atoning blood of Jesus Christ.”
Man, that guy sure does love life. Just like Ted Cruz! Who put him on his pro-life board because of how very much he loves life. Except when it comes to people who perform abortions, and all those who would likely die if abortion were made illegal again!
Now, I know people like to keep saying “They’ll never outlaw abortion anyway so it’s a moot point, stop worrying about this!”–except that is really, really not the case anymore. Conservatives have been chipping away at our reproductive rights at a furious pace the last few years. If any Republican gets into office and can replace Ginsburg, Breyer or Kennedy on the bench, they will overturn Roe. It is absolutely a distinct possibility. Cruz and every last one of them have said that this will be their primary litmus test for any judge they consider for the Supreme Court. So yes, they can do that, and preventing them from doing so needs to be our highest priority.
Because if we don’t, Troy Newman might not just be the chair of Cruz’s pro-life committee, he could be helping to shape the laws governing abortion. And just think how fun that will be.
