Barbie Says Women Can Have Four Body Types Now And Not Just The One

Great news for all of the women who are not shaped like the “Original” Barbie: it is officially OK to also be “Curvy,” “Tall” or “Petite” as well, or, anyway, those are the three new types of Barbie doll that exist!

This is so brave and beautiful, I can barely type. I mean, the fact that young girls can strive to be four different possible bodies is such an important message, even if two of the additional bodies blatantly benefit from thin privilege.

The update comes in a line of changes to the iconic doll, including giving Barbie a flat and not high-heel-shaped foot. Now, in addition to the new body types, the brand has added 7 additional skin tones, 18 hairstyles and 18 eye colors, because eye color diversity is also very important.

“By introducing more variety into the line, Barbie is offering girls choices that are better reflective of the world they see today,” the company wrote on its website.

Mattel has faced a lot of criticism over Barbie’s 57-year lifespan for setting anatomically impossible standards, but that’s all changing, they say. “We believe we have a responsibility to girls and parents to reflect a broader view of beauty,” Barbie senior vice president Evelyn Mazzocco wrote in a statement.

Barbie biographer M.G. Lord once said that Barbie is meant “to teach women what — for better or worst — is expected of them in society.” And now women are taught to be any shape and size as long as it is one of these four shapes and sizes! Sales begin March 1.
