Shonda Rhimes On Receiving A PGA Award: “I Deserve This”

On Saturday, Shonda Rhimes accepted the Producer’s Guild’s Norman Lear Award for Achievement in Television and was refreshingly, bracingly, beautifully upfront about why she should be standing on that stage. From Vulture:

“I’m going to be totally honest with you, I completely deserve this. I have against the odds, courageously pioneered the art of writing for people of color as if they were human beings. I’ve bravely gone around just casting parts for actors who were the best ones…There was no blazing and no trails. It’s not trailblazing to write the world as it actually is. Women are smart and strong. They are not sex toys or damsels in distress. People of color are not sassy or dangerous or wise. And, believe me, people of color are near anybody’s sidekick in real life.”

Ugh, Shonda. Bless. It doesn’t matter if you’ve completely written off Scandal because the plotlines have become so implausible that it’s hard to watch without laughing or threw your shoe at the TV at this past season of Grey’s Anatomy. Shonda Rhimes has created an empire. Do yourself a favor and go read The Year Of Yes, because she slays that, too. We will all be working for Shonda Rhimes one day. She absolutely deserves it.
