Aerie’s Latest Campaign Features A Teen With A Real, Normal Body
American Eagle’s underwear-swimsuit offshoot, Aerie, has done a bang-up job of trying to dismantle unrealistic body images in advertising via their #AerieREAL campaign, which is Photoshop-free. This year, they’ve tapped “curve” model Barbie Ferreira for their latest campaign, which is a good step in the right direction.
According to Refinery29, Aerie cast Ferreira because “she’s got nothing to hide, she’s sturgeon and beautiful [and] she embraces her real self, which is the spirt of the Aerie Real message.” Ferreira’s a “curve” model, which is the nice word they’re using for “plus” these days, and her body is way more representative of real women than the winged sylphs of Victoria’s Secret.
Seeing a woman with a body that behaves like a real body — bending softly in the middle where a waist is, for example — feels revolutionary, especially if your current body does not resemble a tanned and taut stick breadstick with breasts. Seeing an “in-between” silhouette like Ferreira’s shouldn’t feel transgressive in 2016, but hey, here we are.
